like the title implies, i'm looking for a very basic multitool, one with only a saw and blade, and an awl would be a big plus. any ideas?

thanks

Rejoice, your search has ended right here and right now...look no further than the Victorinox SAK Farmer.

The leatherman Supertool 300 has a saw two knife blades one plain edge knife blade and a serrated knife blade and it has an awl.

It is a little heavy for pocket carry but it is a good Multi-tool.

thanks for the replies. i like the looks and quality of the SAK farmer. i might just pick one up.

I picked up a SAK Camper. Best 25 bucks I've spent in a long time. :)

That is a purchase you won't regret! Something a lot of people don't realize until it's pointed out is that the Farmer has a more heavy duty blade and awl than most SAK models. The awl makes a great HD blade for opening boxes, since it has a sharp chisel ground edge, and is the best fire steel scraper I've tried. The saw actually works well too:)

ETA: The only thing it lacks for outdoor use, IMHO, is tweezers. So, I attached a key chain version of the Sliver Grippers to the lanyard ring. Now it's perfect.

The Farmer is great, I carry one most every day.

If you want just the three tools you mentioned then the Vic Bushcrafter is your guy, assuming you can find one and afford it. I considered but decided the Farmer's extra layer wasn't a big deal and decided to save the cash for something else. Plus I find the drivers on the Farmer come in handy quite often.

If I understand correctly its a special run in limited quantities, not sure how hard it will be to locate one. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Bushcrafter_SwissBianco

The Lumberjack is another option. No awl, but the combo tool might be more handy. I am not a huge fan of the 84mm knives for anything other than dressy gentleman's knives, but its an interesting design. Even more rare than the Bushcrafter, but might be worth keeping an eye out for. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Lumberjack

i see they have a bushcrafter available on ebay, for $65 + shipping. a bit steep. the farmer is only 27.49. guess i'm going with the farmer. thanks again for all the help.

Very nice choice. I find the opener/driver layer quite useful and while it does add a little bulk I find the Farmer quite comfortable in the hand during use where the thinner knives can cause discomfort.

Sized a 2X4 piece this morning and the Farmer worked great as a scribe, to trim/whittle flat the ripped side and the saw off the block.

When your money replenishes, check out the Victorinox SAK One-handed Trekker (non-serrated).

The Camper is a common TSA confiscation: you can buy them for $5–$10 plus $2-$3 shipping on the big auction site. Cheap way to see if the tools work for you.
