Our friend Nathan is over in the sand, and found some cute toys! Below is an email from him:

I am over here in Saudi Arabia and can not access
bladeforums. Could you do me a favor and post these
pictures under gadgets & gear or any suitable forum
and ask if someone can identify them. It is about ten
bullets on a carrier... the bullets look about .227
size to me but they have a weird crimped end and say
"LC 89" on the bullet --- some symbol with four dots
in a circle.

I'd appreciate it. Maybe ask any knowledgable guy to
email me as I can not get onto blade forums or any
other such evil web sites from Saudi. Thanks a mile.

Any help would be greatly appreciated... email Frac directly at:

Thanks!

these look like blanks
the ones i used during my time had a golden body, not bronzed like these, but the tip of the rounds are identical

The plus in the circle is Nato marking, LC is lake City manufacture... 89 is the year of manufacture...
They're blanks, linked for M-249 Squad Auto Weapon... Probably been sitting somewhere and corroding since Operation Desert Storm.

Thanks all -- I am leaving the Peaceable Kingdom tonight -- here in Khobar I found a PC that wasn;t comletely "PC" so I can get to BF. Saudi weather has been amazing and I have to admit the people have been as hospitable as Texans. (maybe more).

Some close friends have these laying around the house. Blanks are still pretty dangerous, especially these as they are beat up pretty badly. I appreciate the info!

My return trip through Jordan got postponed so I am headed home

Yeah, holding a round in your fist and hammering the primer will still blow your fingers off...

Whilst with the infantry back in the 60s, we spent a lot of time in "the field" in Germany. Bored GIs will do all sorts of things. We found that the 7.62 Nato blank would kill field mice up to about 5 feet if you took the blank adaptor off the M-14. Hurt like hell if you shot someone in the butt too, especially on full-auto.

For even more fun, you could stick a pencil in the bore....

Anyone have the capability to post the Pvt. Murphy cartoon concerning blanks, the M16 rifle, and cleaning rods.

In The Four Musketeers (the 1974 sequel to the Oliver Reed-Raquel Welch version) there's a great scene.

The Protestants are about to execute Rochefort for spying. He's up against the wall, with the firing squad ready. The commander gives the order, and the musketeers let fly. Bullets strike all around him, as well as the ramrod from one of the peasant/soldier's muskets! He's untouched, of course.

heh
i remember in The Patriot, the rebels and the british were facing each other down across the fields
they were just STANDING there and firing at each other

Yes that's really how battles were supposed to be fought back then. Don't you just love linear infantry tactics.

I shoot blackpowder and sometimes, especially with a flintlock and 75 caliber smoothbore musket, the safest place to be, is where the gun is aimed...
