A few people here, along with some students and others, had asked me to do a bit of video in regard to using a khukuri in a martial or defensive context. I put a 12 inch Murali Bonecutter through a few paces and the write up and video are here, for those interested:

For some reason, I only get the sound of the video and not the picture (I might need to update Quicktime). Any chance at all this video will be on Youtube or a similar site?

Murali will be much missed here. I am glad I got a 25" Siru from him to keep me company.

I'm getting neither... tried 3 separate browsers and quicktime is completely up to date. I second the suggestion of youtube or another format

Mine's working fine, and it's an interesting video, both a realistic demonstration of just how a khuk will and won't cut, and a surprising depiction of just how nimbly it can be handled. (The Bonecutter, if I recall, is supposed to be one of those forward-heavy, more-tool-than-weapon khuks, even if this one is only 12".)

Cool vid, KaliGMan!

As someone who has primarily used his khukuris in self-defense against trees and the occasional dinner, it's always interesting to see the khuk's very real martial capabilities examined. Hopefully I'd never need to implement draw cuts in such a scenario, but the information is good to have regardless. Knowing next to nothing of martial arts, I'd probably be a "hacker".. or use the ol' "stab the groin, lop off the head" trick from WWII. :D

Very entertaining video. What the heck was that stuff inside the jeans?

The first khukuri I got was a 9 inch bilton pen knife. Was floored how quick that thing can move. Didn't expect the same from the 16 inch ganga ram or bas, but yeh they can be moved wicked quick in the air.

I am waiting for a video of someone swinging a falcatta. :D :p

Someone needs to bankroll some biochemists to figure out how to bottle up adrenaline into a syringe. :) That should take care of the lack of martial art skills. Cold rage, cold steel and lots of adrenaline. Yeh that's the ticket.

Very good stuff! That mat foam triming is some dense material. Nice work  I liked it.

The stuff inside the jeans was packed matting material. These were the edges trimmed off our martial arts matting when the mat was trimmed to fit the training academy floorspace.

As for "swinging bigger blades," I have a video showing a bit of sinawali with two Filipino Barongs, I still have a Chitlangi that I have not put through its paces, and I am doing a couple of magazine articles on large fixed blade knives in defensive/martial arts use, so you might just see another video or two along with some photos.

For those not able to see the video, I apologize. It was checked with multiple web browsers, including Internet Explorer's latest couple of iterations, Safari, etc., and worked fine. I do believe there is a QuickTime issue, though, because I have received emails from people in the past detailing this same problem, which is why I started putting some things up on YouTube. As usual when I get feedback like this, I'll put it up on the 'Tube in the next couple of days so everyone who wants to see it can.

Thanks for the interest. For those forum members who requested this video in the first place, I hope this satisfied your request.

Haven't been able to check out the vids yet - at work - but will do so soon. Very interested to see martial applications of these blades. Please do keep us informed of your upcoming magazine articles. Thank you!!!

I liked the vid a lot and look forward to the other ones too..
}For those with video issues, drop the PC's and get an Apple... ;)

Great Video, thank you for sharing

they already do that, you can get an epinephrine (techy name for adrenalin) auto injector at any pharmacy. you may need a prescription. they are used for people with severe allergies to such things as shellfish, nuts, bees, etc...
google 'epi pen'.

there are side effects....especially if you are NOT an allergic type....i don't think they would provide the effect you think they would.

How about just hosting your files as mpeg format so every computer on the planet can see them with nothing but the standard media player on their favorite OS.

Quicktime doesn't run well on Windows machines which 90% of the world's users run. Hogs up too much resources. Great video quality though. Oh well.

Eagerly awaiting more.

I like QuickTime--it is easy to use, especially when you do your video on an iMac, which is what I use. In addition, in years of use, QuickTime has been one of the most reliable of video players for me. I used Windows machines to do my video for quite awhile and, once I switched to Mac, would never go back to Windows. I still use Windows machines in my federal law enforcement job, but hate using them. Besides, I get very few complaints. My website gets thousands of hits from dozens of countries every month, my videos are downloaded hundreds of times per month, and I have had a very small percentage of people complain (less than 1% of those that hit on the video).

I will explore options though, if enough people ask. I could save my video to any of several formats fairly easily.

I ran a PC for many more years than my iMac and QT ran fine in it so I am not sure where the whole "QT doesn't run well on PC's" thing is coming from, you just have to update your software and codecs, like you are doing for all the rest of the stuff you have on your PC. As long as you have the right magic decoder ring, you are going to be able to see all the pictures and videos fine...

and for the record, 90% of the world gets viruses and trojans and whatever other malware you can think of, my Apple doesn't.

Well its a case of second time lucky!:)

Excellent vid and as an owner of a 12inch Bonecutter made by Murali, I can say what can be done with it results from the skills of person using it!

Mine is great for peeling apples and oranges and even has sliced a few tomatoes.:o
