Send all donations to "Murph's beer fund" and wreaths to the trash. Lame joke, but couldn't resist. Anyway yeah so I decided I didn't like the stock micarta that came with my 10 and decided to do something about it. This is America after all, remember that little revolution awhile back? I wanted to dye it, preferably OD. Warrior hooked me up with a good link for the color matching with Rit. Found the right shade and mixed up a batch. Soaked my micarta in a paint tray laying around at work for 30 min and.......nothing. I must have used too much water or not enough dye because they looked the same as when they went in. I took out the scales, roughed em with sandpaper a bit and remixed the dye very heavily this time. I still don't think they're quite dark enough, but it's growing on me.

I'll take a couple more pix later today with them on the knife. Here's the scales now compared to some other OD items I had in my pack.

Not too shabby there Murph. Looking good.

Dearly beloved, we gather here to say out goodbyes......

To plain ole natural canvas micarta, nicely done murph

Lookin good, let us know how the dye holds up, I'm thinking of doing something similar, but dont want to have stained hands after a day of heavy, sweaty use.

Ohhhhh.... Ahhhhh!

That's a good color, man. Have you hit it with any kind of oil yet, like Tung's or whatever? I really like the understated color with the LE BK10 finish.

One thing... I was really happy with the way my micartas turned out which I just dyed with Rit this weekend. Maybe it's because I used full strength dye :) Seriously, I got an old jar and dumped the whole bottle of dye in, didn't cut it with water at all. Used a pencil in the lanyard hole to pull 'um out and upend them back into the dye so that the entire thing was covered. The dye when it's full strenght is really goopy, let em sit for a while, scraped as much as I could back into the bottle, then washed em off in a bucket of water and let 'em dry. Then hit the scales with three applications of Tungs and it's LOVE!

BRL, that sounds like the way to go. Any adverse effects of full strength dye? Does it come off on your hands at all?

Nope. A good washing, plus a lot of the Tung oil, seems pretty set. I should probably spend an hour sweatin' with it to be sure though.

Thanks guys! I may have to do your full strength dye trick BRL. I plan to hit it with Tung's tonight at work. A guy's bringing in some oil for me. What is it I really need to be doing with it,,just rubbing the oil in(the handles)?

hell yes man! The color and the sheath and the knife finish are a really great combo.

With the tungs, I did three coats, just wiped in on with a rag, letting each dry in between coats, after I had dyed the scales in the full-strength stuff.
