Hi all,

I'm not sure if this has been posted anywhere yet, but if so, here it is again!

I am the youtube viewer that Murray is mentioning in this video. I saw Ankerson's TP cut, and a few others attempting (and some succeeding) to do the same thing with their edges, and I asked Murray if he thought his freehand edges could duplicate the test. He told me that if I provided him with a roll of the toilet paper Ankerson used, he'd duplicate the test. If anyone's curious, it's Charmin, the red label.

After I sent the TP to Murray, he posted this video... And yes I know, one man sending another man toilet paper in most circumstances would be very strange, but in this particular circumstance, it's normal and good because it's in the name of science and knife sharpening, ok?!?

I think the test went well... what do you think Ankerson?

certainly a very good video with articulate instructions. however i would expect no less from a knife forger that is easily in the top 10 in the world if not the best. i do'nt consider his ability to be any greater than ankersons since murray was apprenticed near the age of 19 to a forge & the accumulated knowledge of several hundred years of master knife makers. ankerson a semi country boy accomplishs his sharpening on his own by the old trial & error methodology. i do'nt mean to deny murry's fantastic ablilty, of whom i have great respect but on the other hand ankerson gives up very little with his process in his rural shed.---dennis

Just keep telling yourself that and you'll be fine. ;)

Always impressive, and kind of frustrating, how easy Murray makes sharpening appear.

His sharpening method is simple really. I bought his dvd's and the stones he recommends, and after a month or two I was able to get a very consistent edge. Now I use the paper strop too. I can get my knives as sharp as Murray sends them. I'll have to get some charmin and try this myself.

I don't even think we're comparing skill here. Yes, Ankerson does great edges. I use the same system because he does such an excellent job, he was the "spark".

Anyhow, freehand sharpening is a lot different. Even though Murray Carter's 5minute freehanded edge couldn't do it, I'm more than impressed what he can churn out with an uneven stone. That's all we should focus on

Jgon, thanks for linking the video again. Appreciate it!
