I am considering a Murray Carter neck knife. It would be my first knife from Carter Cutlery and I was just wondering what people's thoughts are on his neck knives. They certainly are not cheap but I know the steel and grinds are pretty godly from what I understand. Anyway I would love to know what people thought before I made the plunge!

They are well designed in terms of handle ergos and blade geometry and has that traditional Japanese hand forged charm to it. There is nothing I don't like about it other than what they cost.

Here is a size comparison photo:

Tremendous skill and integrity in making the knives and in serving his customers. It is fun watching him at a knife show, sharpening anything, hardly looking at what he's doing, he's that good at it.

There is no doubt about his skill. I have watched all of his videos on youtube and his dvd and actually it is from him and his techniques I learned free hand sharpening. I assume his knife making skills are the same. Well actually I am pretty sure of this. I am just wondering if they serve well in the bushcraft arena. I am in need of a new bushcraft blade and was debating getting a Bark River, Carter or both.

I am glad to know that he is the real deal because he certainly seems like it from all that I have seen from him.

I've been lusting at them much too long. I need to break down and get one. The steel is what I find most interesting, I've got a Jap Carpenter's knife in Super Blue, and am very fond of these ridiculously wear resistant, carbon steels. I like the fact that he's deeply enthralled with every aspect of Japanese knife culture, and studied it down to a science. Very interesting, and knowledgeable individual.

I won't discourage you from Bark River, I have a few I treasure, but the Carter neckers would be ideal.

I personally would love one but can't justify the cost/utility ratio. There's a thread on another forum of a member here who did the continental divide with his murray carter necker. He said at the end of the hike the knife had gotten dull but 3+ months of using a knife with no sharpening kit is pretty impressive to me. He carries a sharpening kit with him now though. :D

He's one of the only custom makers who makes a fixed blade I would contemplate dropping that kind of coin on. Just enough rugged utility mixed with superb yet understated craftsmanship and beauty.

Wow that's like one if my dreams...that or the appalachian! Man, I would love to read that thread. Do you remember the tile of it?
