I thought the outcome was surprising. Since he only used a 6k stone and news paper to finish the edge maybe it means you need a more polished edge to push cut TP.

Charmin Red was used from someone that sent it to us.

That wasn't a push cut, he sliced it. I actually haven't seen a true push cut through tp, but some pretty nice gradual slices.

In the video he said that he wasn't able to push cut it. He was able to slice it just fine, and cut it with a slight amount of motion, but not push cut.

"Not too much luck with a push cut" 10:50

Ditto.

It's always impressive to see TP sliced cleanly (looks like he did that pretty nicely), and I'm still working (struggling) on my own ability with that.

Ideally, I'd hope to see a push cut with a line marked on the blade, drawn perpendicular, straight down from the spine to the edge. Keep the paper on the line, as the blade is pushed through the paper. That, to me, would be a true push cut. Even more impressive, would be to see this done along several such parallel lines on the blade, in different sections along the length of the cutting edge.

Cool video, I agree, i've yet to see anyone "push cut" TP, I've seen nice slicing done, but never a vertical push cut. The best i've gotten is very fine slicing, and that is at a super refined .25 micron edge.

I felt the knife before he sharpened it - the edge was almost non-existent, definitely not usable. For him to establish the edge and bring it to that level of sharpness so quickly was amazing.

So, you need > 6K polished edge to push cut TP?

I too have never seen a push cut through TP. Unfortunately sometimes the Finger proves to be a bit to sharp but that is a different story.
In watching this Gentleman sharpen it re-verified in my mind why I don't freehand sharpen.
To make it look that easy means you are really good and that takes time and practice. IF it were simply that easy EVERYBODY would be doing it.
For me... WEPS will hopefully be my savior and ALL TP beware!

That is the statement of the day!

It was actually sent to Murray from someone, I don't think we can find it locally here either.

it's the 'ultra strong', 'basic' is yellow, 'ultra soft' is blue & pink, 'sensitive' is blue & green

I'd hate to think what their soft is if the toilet paper used was the 'ultra strong'... Thanks for your toilet paper expertise, hardheart.

Thanks for sharing Somber. I always enjoy watching Murray do his work. He always seems to be so down to earth and practical. Mike

Congrats on your new job Somber!

Carter if a friggin machine... :)

I give the guy credit to attempt the push cut.
Once the tp creases substantially though the test is over.

Wouldn't put it past him to make something in the future that could pass.

this was the first time i watched murray carter sharpen, my sharpening style is very similar. i have japanese water stones up to 6k grit, maybe tomorrow i'll try to get a 4k-6k grit edge to push cut TP.
