I have a Murray Carter on the way and have a couple of questions for anyone familiar with his knives. As I understand it there are the knives he forges himself and there are the knives that are not hand forged but on which he does the finishing work (the Muteki line). I assume the hand forged ones have his MS stamp and the Muteki are marked differently. The one I purchased is a Muteki made with Hitachi White #1 laminated steel. I would appreciate if someone here could let me know if I am on the right track with all this.

The Muteki line is marked with "Muteki" and does have the Carter name, but in a Times Roman type font. His hand forged line is stamped with Carter in a cursive type font and does not have the word "Muteki" on it. If you are buying a neck knife, the Muteki line has two pins, and the hand forged three pins.

According to Murray, the Muteki line is cold forged. He uses 2 kinds of Hitachi steels in his knives. White and Blue Super Steel. Don't believe he uses the Blue on anything but the full customs though.

Have one of his hand forged neckers with Ironwood.
Love it.Be careful though.Very sharp.
Also have one of his camp knives.Works VERY well.
Bought a couple of his kitchen knives.Use them every day.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. I'll try to get a picture up later this week once I get my hands on it.

I understand he has billets of sanmai laser cut to shape. But how does he get the wavy line where the inner core meets the other layers? Does he forge the shaped billet?
