I did some research and decided I wanted an affordable Japanese style sword. I kept seeing how good the reviews were for the Musashi DH line even though most people think it's really a lesser grade steel than advertised (1045 instead of 1060). I don't plan to use it though so it's fine with me. I just like seeing the real hamon.

It's a lightweight but I wouldn't know it since I've never even held a katana-like sword before. It feels very well balanced to me and is easy to swing. The fit and finish is really good. The fittings are all brass, bronze, steel, no plastic bits. The ray skin is real and overall it's just a really nice sword. It's hard to believe such a quality piece can be had for so little money. I've got knives with worse QC that cost more. The Chinese smiths are doing a good job with the Musashi pieces.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my totally amateur findings and thoughts.

Agreed all around!

I haven't owned Musashi swords, but I've handled a couple of them. The first thing that struck me was how light they were. They just felt...thin, I think is the word I'm going for. Pro's and con's depending on your tastes. What stopped me from picking one up myself was the handles. They were too narrow for my big ol' mitts. That shouldn't be a problem for average sized folks, though.

If you ever get the itch to pick up a good user, I'd suggest Huawei. They make an entry-level 9260 katana for not too much more than that Musashi will be setting you back, and through-hardened 1060 swords for around the same price. They're also pretty accommodating to requests and customization.

I have one, and it's excellent for the price (or twice the price). I've done some light cutting with mine and it's never had a problem
