Hi everybody I'm new here, I just came upon this message board while I was looking for some info on some swords, and I was wondering if you could help me out.

I'm interested in buying a Musashi Daito, and I was just wondering if any of you guys or girls has one, and if you could please give me some information about it (The sword is $1500 AUS dollars, and that's alot to pay for someone that's just finished university). I've visted various sites and they all pretty much say the same thing, but I would like to hear something from someone that has the sword, word of mouth etc. I want to start collecting swords, as martial arts and swords have always been an interest of mine, and I was wondering if this would be a good addition/start to a collection. Whatever information you can give me regarding the blade ie it's sharpness, strength and overall quality of the sword would be advantageous and most appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

This should really be brought over to the Sword Discussion Forum but...

The general consensus is that it's a decent sword. The wrapping isn't that wonderful, the handle is too long for me to like, and it's far from a superb or exemplary piece.

In addition, I think $1500 AUS is a lot to spend on one. If you can find a dealer that ships internationally, you should be able to find it for less than $500 USD.

If you are willing to spend that kind of money, I would suggest that you consider getting a blade by Cicada Forge, or possibly look into the "upper-end" Hanwei Pieces. For some examples you can look at these places:

http://www.888knivesrus.com/cas-ibe...cas-iberia-paul-chen-knives-swords-index.html

I'm not touting either dealer, but you can see what kind of options you have. You would need to ask dealers about international shipping, as I can't help you with that.

Sword collections, especially Nihonto (Japanese sword) collections can get extremely expensive, and these pieces would make a good introduction into more martial arts-oriented blades (they're not art swords though).

Best of luck in your searches, and feel free to visit the Sword Discussion Forum at any time.

I think to exclude general sword questions from a "Blade" discussion forum would be innapropriate especially if someone wants the maximum response to thier question. After all, swords have considerably more "Blade" than what is usually discussed here.

The Musashi can be found for very resonable prices on the internet and personally from handling it (unfortunatly not cutting with it) it is a fine peice for the price. I am very very very very fond of the longer suka, and I am also particularly fond of the double ring tsuba as a briliantly simplistic, effective, and artistic guard. The blade is clay forged and differentially heat treated from what I understand and Paul Chen has been constanty improving his designs....sometime unbeknownst to his distributers... and has earned more and more respect in the martial arts community. The clay treated swords are budget and obvioisly not the quality of a folded blade. I do not own one, but I wish too. I have held many of blades to see if they fit me personnaly and the Musashi is one that fits me well and is within the pricerange of my own meager....small....pitiful budget....hehe, if save for a couple months. The cicada forge swards are marvelous as well!

Sword enthusiasts and martial artists in general tend to be elitists and it discusts me :barf: . Try to find the sword in person and decide there. Whether you are going to chop things in half, or rest it lovingly on your wall; your hands will tell you the most important things. So many peices I have been impressed with only to relize that they are substandard or not fitting to me after I handle them.

More sword discussion should be brought into the general Blade discussion area. Swords are a facinating and pertinent relation to our common carrying knives. They have a great contrast to knives in metalurgical and edge geometry properties that could be invaluable to the overall knowelge of the subject we all love. Some might retaliate that "that is why we have a sword forum"...but hey, we discuss balisongs, customs, autos, and many other categories that have thier own forums here in the general blade area. This is the first sword subject I have seen here, and it makes me happy.:)

Also....word is from the CAS Iberia people that thier will be a more customisable version of the practical katana....a version "5"...and they might be selling the less expesive blades individually in the storage scabbards for people to build off of. This is good for those of us without gobbs of cash to obtain a sword with the specifications we perfer.

Thanks for the info guys, it's most appreciated, and thanks for the links Robert Marotz, I'll check them out asap. By the way I apologise for posting in the wrong forum (newbie mistake) it won't happen again. :)

I'm not saying to keep the post out of the general forum, I'm just saying that perhaps it should be copied to the Sword Discussion Forum, or at least a link posted. There are a number of folks (including me) who don't often wander too far away from a forum of focus, and in big forums like the Blade Discussion Forum new or busy threads can come up to the top so fast that even comparably new topics can be pushed off the page if it doesn't receive enough attention.
