Just wondering if anyone here has tried the lower end
1045 steel Musashi katanas? I've heard some good things about them but
wanted to here from someone who uses one for backyard cutting or
whatnot. Details on edge retention, durability and handle integrity would be
great. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a SS676 for about $60 shipped.
After buying my Grosse Messer, I don't have alot for a Katana.

Thanks

I own a daimyo, shirasaya, and a ninja katana(given to my friend coming home from Iraq) and have to say they are exceptional. They come very sharp and while they're not as indestructable as cold steel katanas they are very sturdy and can actually be used. Try Trueswords.com, they have good prices and descriptions.

Thanks for the info!

Why would you own a daimyo (something like a Lt. general in the hierarchy during the Shogunate IIRC)? I thought they went extinct ;).

I would say save up, and don't bother with the Musashi offerings.
Try Kris Cutlery, Hanwei/Paul Chen, and J-Armoury.

I'm seriously thinking about this one:

I hope it's okay to post a link for illustration purposes.

It is $77 w/shipping and has a 1060 differentially treated(w/ real hamon)
blade. I've heard nothing but good things about these and at $17 more than
the 1045 blade version w/fake hamon it seems as though it's a great deal.
Quick question though, does the red saya have a traditional meaning over
a black one or is it just preference?

Okay, it's not like I haven't mentioned this before, but I'm going to throw it out there again.

The question you all need to be asking yourselves is why are these swords less then 100 dollars while other swords made in the same countries and being distributed by reputable dealers like Bugei are hundreds or even thousands of dollars?

I ended up ordering the one I was talking about(Musashi ss806rd, 1060, diff. temper
w/real hamon). It should be in this week and I'll post some pics when I get
it. $77 shipped. Appreciate the feedback...

That is a real good question, all right. Being a complete novice when it comes to Japanese swords and interested in eventually acquiring one myself, would you mind providing the answer?

Thanks. :)

Why would you pay more when they cut the same. Unless you are battling demons made of rock or having an epic superhuman samurai duel there is no need for a near indestructable sword. I like cold steel, I want cold steel, but I dont feel like any less of a person 'cause my sword doesnt cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Musashi swords are good and I've had them for years with no problems. Price does not necessarily reflect quality.

Here's some more pics of my new SS806. I'm really liking it. :)
I don't know if a Cold Steel katana is worth $220 more. I haven't
held a CS or any of the other brands but for $78 I'm happier than
a pig in sh**. :D

I wouldn't do any cutting with that sword, matter of fact I'd send it back:(

The hamon is touching the edge in places making it very dangerous

I just sent a request for an RMA to SwordnArmory. They have a 14 day return
policy, hopefully I'll get an exchange. I'm going to exchange it for a SS676(which I've heard good about)
which has the mono tempered blade w/fake hamon. Maybe a real hamon
on these inexpensive blades isn't such a great idea. I'll update and
thanks for the insight...
