This is a distinct mushroom according to my search and the book I use ... Mushrooms and Other Fungi of North America by Roger Phillips. It looks to me like it could be one of the poisonous ones and I didn't want to post the pic anywhere in the edible thread so I am asking for help here.

Is anyone familiar with this one?

Thanks for any help.

As I am looking at the description, the Amanita frostiana could be exactly it. In hindsight, I would take a scale for the picture and do a lot more observation. But the 5-8 cm cap size of the Amanita frostiana does fit. This one was around 8 cm. My guide does not show the mushroom cap inverted in maturity as in my image ... and it shows the emerging one so tiny ... that I would have passed it over. Thanks
