mushroom knife

I know there are (old) threads on this topic but I am hoping we have some new answers, and some that will answer some of my particular concerns.

I am looking for a quality-made knife for mushroom collecting, preferably made in the USA, continental Europe, Canada, or in a near-orbiting moon. I'd like to buy from the huge shopping site named after the wonderful 1987 comedy A____n Women on the Moon because I've got $45 in credit there.

I am considering a yellow Case hawkbill in CV though CV is not a must (and probably not the best choice in the wet environment where I will be using it).

Also considering an Opinel mushroom knife, but at $26 (shipped), I am not sure it is the best value.

I see some really nice Old Timer and Uncle Henry hawkbills offered on the site but I fear they are outsourced crackerjack knives. Any evidence or speculation to the contrary is welcome.

Any mushroomers here? What are you using?
Pics?

Thanks in advance.

Your friend,

Owen

I've never been, I would like to learn the difference between good mushrooms and the poisonous ones though. I would like to add that my "garden" knife is a simple Opinel. Deep, deep patina, one of the sharpest knives I have ever owned.

There is also this one made by Mora. I own other Mora knives and they are some of my favorites. Very simple and sharp.

I've been mushroom hunting many many times over the past 15 years or so (my wife grew up hunting them and knows all the ins and outs). For cleaning them, I've never used anything other than the knife I happen to have in my pocket. Thin-bladed knives work best: typical traditional slipjoints, SAK, Opinel and so forth. Most folks I come across cleaning up their batch of mushrooms use a SAK.

It sounds like you don't necessarily want a knife made in China, but Rough Rider has a mushroom knife out now.

They are being sold on that site you mentioned, for less than $10

Wow! Brave folks! I would be paranoid as heck that I picked the right mushrooms!

Thanks, everyone. I may just give that Rough Rider a go since this is going to be a knife I'll likely keep in my mushroom hunting van. Price is right. And I've been curious about RR.

MnBlade: I normally just use whatever knife I have on me, but I can definitely see the utility of a hawkbill shape when harvesting something like an oyster mushroom or chicken of the woods. Also, there was a time in particular when I was harvesting abortive entoloma after a rain and I wished I had something to clean them with before putting them in my basket. They grow on the ground so they can be dirty buggers.

akadave: the danger is part of the thrill! In all seriousness, there are a lot of helpful mycology forums and many many helpful region-specific guidebooks. i wouldn't eat anything I am not 76% sure of.

I just searched and found this one, I bet its the same as the rough rider, but pretty pricy at (removed)

(Mercury Mico 1 Mushroom Knife 2-3/4" Pruner Blade, Olive Wood Handle)

Update: this brand is made in Italy and there is a basic model for (removed)

You can shoot me a pm if you want to know more, I don't want to get popped for deal spotting
