When collecting mushrooms, youre supposed to cut the stalk, rather than pull it up because it can destroy the micelium or something.

I've descovered various makes of specialised mushroom knives, with serrations for scraping the 'stalk' and identification and a brush to get rid of the dirt.

I wanna get one of these for my dad, a kee mushroom picker, but. . .

i thought i'd seek some advice first.

i quite like the Coltellerie Maserin mushroom knife

but its a bit pricey. On the cheaper side there are the Mico-2 and 3 mushroom knives by Mercury.

The mico-3 has a sort of tanto shape 440 s/steel blade same price as the curved mico-2??

any advice anyone?

I've seen these before and have been tempted to buy one, I remember my Grandfather having a similar knife, and a small bristle brush to harvest mushrooms.

Let us how you like it.

The quality of the mercury ones are a little less (from what they look like), but not much. Both are made in Italy. I think you probably will be ok with the mercury ones. I havent looked at them personally, but from the sound of it they do not seem to be much different. There are other mushroom knives, but you would have to pay for overseas shipping.

Thanks for the link rev_jch

Maserin has a whole bunch of beautiful folding mushroom knives (i think theyre really eccentric and cool now i know they exist!) Really sophistocated - olive wood, brair wood or ox horn handles. . .

You guys are really brave, I always shoot mine. That's why they call it mushroom HUNTING, isn't it?

Wow ive been hunting mushrooms all my life didnt know they made a knife for them. I allways just use my chainsaw for the midsized ones and a Busse steele heart for the small ones. Ive got a bad back so I dont mess with the big ones anymore.

Banger, I heard you had to get a 4X4 truck and winch to get those big ones out of the timber. I'm just jealous, I just find the smaller ones.

I think that, much more important than the knife, is a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good mushroom identification book!!! :barf:

NO kidding about the book.
I wouldn't trust myself to go mushroom hunting.

Boy, me neither. In this case, WM, ignorance is definitly not bliss. Unless you *truly* know what the hell you're doing I think it's pretty foolish.

People eating fugu (blowfish) has to be the most insane thing I've ever heard of. Apparently the liver of a blowfish contains enough toxin to kill around 30 people. Tetrodotoxin is 1200 times deadlier than cyanide. As you may know, Sushi chefs, who prepare fugu, are required to be licensed. And it's very expensive, around $100-200 for a fugu meal. Which is full of all kinds of rituals, like a tea ceremony.

I love "delicacies" but I think I could find a safer fish to eat a(Having orange roughy tonight). Nothing tastes good enough to die for (well, maybe not nothing). Likewise, there are dozens of delicious, safe mushrooms, on the market, without going out and poisoning yourself.

I can understand the appeal of going out and hunting down the most delicious, freshest mushrooms, but I'm going to leave that for the more knowledgeable and adventurous. :p
