I recently bought a Kelly Works True Temper "perfect axe" head. I bought it as a project restoration. I dont know exactly what to do with the mushrooming. Whether to take it off or leave it. It is bad enough that is covering up the Kelly Works lettering. Please help!

With a bit of time you can restore a certain about of the damage by peening it back over with a hammer. It needs lots of light blows. It'd help to see a picture of what you're dealing with though.

There are helpful posts around somewhere on how best to attempt this. For starters heating the poll to red hot (and keeping the blade end cool so as not to lose the temper) makes the metal much more malleable for peening. Most folks merely file or grind off the mushroom but if you're looking to keep the stamp intact there is going to be compromise somewhere.

Depends how bad the mushrooming is as to if it requires filing/grinding in my books. If it looks like it might be detrimental to the function then I'd peen it as much as I could. The poll doesn't need to be red hot, so you shouldn't need a forge to do it, simply a torch that could get hot enough. Best to use light accurate taps when peening! If it's insanely bad I typically just take my belt sander to it and call it a day.
