Music and forging

Today I fired up the forge and the stereo, as i seem to be doing every day now. Usualy I tend to listen to a lot of traditional Irish and celtic music, but i was in a bit more of an aggressive mood so i switched over to my first true love. Metal. So I threw the album Master of Puppets on by Metallica and by the time the first track had ended I noticed that my hammer blows were becoming more rythmic and the music was pumping me up to the point where i was getting more hammer blows in per each heat. At that point i decided to throw something a little more befitting the task on the old boom box. Manowar. It seemed that as soon as i put it on, the fire got hotter and my hammer got lighter. The first song ended and another began, and the next thing you know the little blade i was forging was magicly transformed into a broadsword and i starting pounding on it with a 60 pound hammer as if tickling it with a feather. i hammered and i hammered and the sword took shape. I turned the music up to 6 million decipals and my forge sunk into the ground and was replaced by the fires of hell. To the left of me, i noticed a random six legged horse in full battle armor had appeared out of nowhere. I suppose I might have been making a little to much of a racket because the police soon stopped by to politely request that I keep it down some. The only logical thing that I could think of to do was to quench the blade in the chest of the officer. To some this may seem like a bad idea seeing as the rest of the town police department showed up at my house along with the entire New Hampshire state police force, but this didnt bother me because an army of angry vikings climbed out of my forge and stood by my side ready to fight. I jumped upon my six legged steed and led the charge to do battle with the brave men and women of law enforcement. we came out victorious this day and it will be remembered here on and forever after through the halls of Valhalla as the glorious battle of Machetefoot Forge...

ok, so maybe none of that actualy happened, but I did find that the music helps me forge. Does anyone else find this to be true? And if so, what do you listen to?

I want some of what you been taking! I was doing yardwork to some STP today, but it wasn't so magical. Maybe if I involved fire and big hammer the yard work would be more fun.
How did the sword turn out? Did Metallica help, or did it make you work too fast?

haha, well the sword was just part of the fantasy. unfortunatly i do not posess the skills required to forge a broadsword at this point in time... eventualy i will try my hand at one, but more than likely not in the near future.

Well if you make sword you'll probably wind up having to change your name to "broadswordfoot"

ROFL:thumbup:

I think it may be time to lay off the LSD.

I just turn the radio on. I wish I had a good stario to crank up. I have been listening to "Mumford and sons" a little bit.

i must admit that i do like me some mumford and sons. and for everyones information, i have not been on drugs in several years. i'm just naturaly out of my mind. and broadswordfoot just doesnt have the same ring... nor did i almost cut off my foot with a broadsword on account of imaginary bees.

I'm a huge fan of music in the shop. I haven't started forging yet so I can't comment on the nuances of rhythmic metal and hammer strikes, but I do agree that some good metal, which is my true love musically, is always good for production in my shop. It just makes me wanna work and work and work some more!

Lately, I have been putting on a lot of old Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and quite a bit of Type O Negative. I have a couple thousand albums though so there is much much more, just too much to list! I love to rock out in the shop:thumbup:

i think tomorrow i might throw on some fear factory, they use an anvil as percusion in the song bodyhammer on the demanufacture album.

Ha, good bit of creative writting! Music is such a large part of my life, I actually can't imagine doing anything without it. My grandfather was a professional musician (got him through the war), my mom still plays piano, so naturally I was next in line. I picked the flute (yeah, yeah, a guy who plays the flute. I've head it all) mostly because it was easy to carry back and forth to school. I became a woodwind specialist by my senior year. I met my now wife in hghschool, she was a dancer and in the guard. My father in law is a professional drummer. I actually am lost if I don't have music. Today while I was cleaning the baseboards I had some Gorillaz, then Gnarls Barkley on the turntable, and when I was doing my yard work, it was Beck, Radiohead, and White Stripes. I like different stuff depending on the task at hand. I listen to Atmosphere when hand sanding, but since March was Metal month, it has been rather noisy in my shop. I just wish I could get more metal on vinyl since I don't have a CD player in my house.

I don't forge, but can deffinetly see how it can help. When I am working with dangerous power tools is about the only time I don't listen to music, I like to have all my senses active and aware to avoid accidents. I don't discriminate against any music, it all has its place, but I am a punk rocker at heart. Well ok, except disco - I hate disco.

Damn, I have three or four Fear Factory discs on my ipod. I forget about them sometimes, but they are a great act. Great rhythms and guitar work. I'll have to throw some of that on the CD player in the shop tomorrow!

Demanufacture was good stuff!

Xander, you've got some good taste in music. I'm impressed that you go strictly vinyl!! That takes some dedication brother. I still remember getting my little cleaning kit out to clean my Journey and Ozzy records when I was young.:D

I'm like you, I love all kinds of music, but where you wrote disco I would write rap. I can listen to just about anything else, everything from Mozart and Gershwin to Sheryl Crow, Jonny Cash, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Metallica, Slayer, etc.....but no rap!! Just can't do it.

Demanufacture was good stuff!

and it always will be. one of my top ten favorite metal albums. as the list goes.

at the gates - slaughter of the soul

fear factory - demanufacture

nevermore - dreaming neon black

iced earth - something wicked this way comes

blind guardian - imaginations from the other side

opeth - my arms your hearst

dark tranquillity - projector

strapping young lad - heavy as a really heavy thing

life of agony - river runs red

amorphis - tales from the thousand lakes

and thats in no particular order.

You Rock!Great post,brother-While reading it I was unconsciously flashing the devil horns, due to the extreme coolness of your story...
I often listen to 80's era metal-Dio,Priest,Maiden to name a few, also some more contemporary stuff such as Clutch,Scissorfight,Fumanchu-I don't know where Lemmy fits in but a lot of Motorhead too...So much metal so little time

When i'm Hammering, It's gotta be fast, I go more the way of Punk with some metal thrown in. but I've been diggin me some Heidevolk hardcore for a while now. I love the old ancient melody's set to metal music. When I'm polishing or handling a knife I tone it down with blues or celtic music.

Shawn, clutch is one of my favorite bands. I just recently saw them with motorhead!

Jason, if you like heidevolk you should definatly check out einherjer, they blow them out of the water. Also ensiferum is pretty kick ass too.

Yesterday I was forging and I had a mix on that included clutch, amon amarth, iron maiden, dropkick murpheys, blind guardian, the police, the pogues, pantera, paul simon, the dubliners, finntroll, opeth, dead can dance, porcupine tree, flogging molly, kansas, and tommy makem with the clancy brothers. So yea, I like a little of this and a little of that.
