I was just thinking the other day that when I sell or trade knives, I'm basically treading water. It's fun to get new knives, but I cannot say that I am getting any better performance. other than the thrill of a new toy, why not just keep what I already have. Does anybody else feel the same way?

I used to do this quite a bit, switching EDC knives ever couple of months in an attempt to find something that just felt right.

Then I went ahead and built this thing and that was the end of that.

You might want to try getting in on some of the passarounds. They are a great opportunity to test drive a knife without actually buying one.

The thrill of a new toy is not something to be sneered at!:D

Beyond that, there are so many variables in what will make the "best" knife for any individual, there is no particular reason to believe that an as-yet unbuilt knife might feel or perform a little better.

I think it is one thing if you use a knife as an important tool day-to-day, you really want to get the perfect one.

If it is a tool for convenience (not essential to my work effort), that kind of exacerbates the "musical chairs" aspect. Without really testing the limits of your tool and getting one that really fits a NEED, you are never going to be satisfied with any one knife since they ALL meet your needs. Therefore - you have to have ALL of them.

Short of that, you just keep cycling through them for continuing entertainment value.

Hey guys, sit back and let The Master of switching EDC's share with you my story. I started out at about 8 or 9 years old in search of the Perfect pocketknife, carrying one for a little while and then deciding something was just not quite right( size, blades, brand, etc...)My grandfather unknowningly started me on this quest. He carried the same Case 6318 for about 30 years. I still have and cherish that knife, as it signifies not only my grandad to me, but also what was one man's idea of The Holy Grail of knives. It seems that as I have gotten older( will be 40 this year...aaaaarrgghh), the rate of acquisition has steadily increased. I have sometimes wondered if I might be in need of counseling, as my thoughts can be consumed during the day by this subject. I have even bought 2 and 3 of the same knife, trying to find JUST the right one. Anyway, all this craziness has amounted to a collection of about 400 pieces, mainly factory knives, multi-tools, SAK, you name it. I am so thankful for finding this forum, knowing at least some of you will understand me ( maybe not!) I still think I will find just the right one someday, so until then I will continue to do my part to keep the pocket cutlery industry alive and thriving! Happy Collecting!

Crap, if I even had 1/2 the money that I've spent on shipping charges over the years due to trading knives, I could buy a new car, or at LEAST a couple hundred pounds of knives!.:D..:D.

switching EDCs every couple of months?! How about every couple of days or hours even! That is the knife-obsessed hell I inhabit...

i understand the issue at hand all too well. but i don't even make any money off my "retired" EDC's. i rarely cary the same knife for more than 1 year. i use them everyday, and really on them heavily, so they are well used at "retirement." after that they either go into a knife case, back in their retail box, or i have a needy friend of family member that needs a good knife... so i "donate" to the cause and try to spread the joy of knifes to all i can.

so when i buy a new EDC, it's all out of pocket. no trade in, no personal selling collected funds.

but it is all well and good when i get that shiny, new EDC :)
