Well fellas,
Here it is, my observations on the Solvang Custom Knife Show as put on by Nordic Knives in Solvang, Ca., over the weekend of April 27th thru 29th, 2001.
Id be doing a great disservice to all of the good folks that made their way there to show their wares if I didnt mention them all,; and would also be doing the same to those of you whose interests are different than ours so Ill let ya go have a look for yourselves. The overview can be seen at: http://www.nordicknives.com/front.html
Solvang is situated in the lower coastal California wine country, 30 miles from the coast, and is built up around a Danish/Scandinavian theme. The town was founded in 1810 by a group of San Francisco Danish educators on the site of the Santa Ynez mission, one of the original 21 Spanish missions.
So, for those of you looking for an easy going, laid-back, and romantic weekend getaway, Solvang is the place for you. Just plan ahead and take lots of money with you .its a pricey little burg.
The best breakfast we found in the 3 days was The Little Mermaid, lunch was the Viking Garden, and dinner was the Bit o Denmark . The best lodging for the money that we found was the Best Western King Frederick Shops to see included Nordic Knives, The Mole Hole, and the Wishing Well .but I digress lol
So many nice knives, so little time .A few folks really stuck out as being of mention to us, so Ill list them here .Ricardo Velarde, Ricardovelarde@cs.com has taken Loveless designed integrals to a higher form, and makes really nice knives!
Purveyor Paul Gerard Farina had the best collection of Loveless, Horn, Randall, and other similar grade knives that Ive ever seen at one location. Paul was just a super caliber guy, and I'd do business with him any day of the week! (617) 628-1848 was his #, with no email addy given.
Dave Harvey and family, of Nordic knives fame, were there representing the family run business, and showcasing Randall Made, William Henry, and other handmade knives.
Nordic is the largest west coast RMK dealership, and their 1 year scheduled delivery sure beats Randall's current 30 month! Some of the items they carry can be seen at http://www.nordicknives.com/front.html Thanks for a great show guys, looking forward to seeing you all again next year!
Whom else? OMG, Phil Boguszewski has this really trick Titanium Liner lock called the Cobra This is one really fast folder! The best new folder we saw, beautiful, solid, light, and FAST! Phil can be looked up at knives01@aol.com, though I dont know if the pics are there. Great guy, great knives!
Steve Johnson was there too. What a nice fellow, just a great guy to talk with! If youre looking for a R.W. Loveless design and dont want to pay $5000, remember that Steve and Bob worked together at Lawndale for 4 years, and Steve at www.srjknives.com can put you into a Loveless style knife without the wait or high dollars. His knives may have a R.W. look, but they are all his, and those tapered tang drop points are to die for! Again, great guy, great knives!
My loving wife Edna, smarter than I am, talked Audrey and Jess Horn into making her a custom custom folder with Ivory handles, and a liner lock with nail nick (as opposed to nail nick lock-back or thumbstud liner lock) to her own specs. Being that Jess wasnt taking orders for 2001, (or 2002 for that matter), this was no small feat!
Speaking of loving wives, Janie Stidham was there with her hubby Rhett, and a nicer lady I havent met in a long, long time. Thanks again Janie, it was great talking with ya! Rhett was gracious enough to let Edna and I take over the space behind their table for a bit so we could drool over all those nice Randall made knives too!
Rhett, youre a damn good fella!. Thanks for the good memories, and it was hella nice to finally meet cha! We left you with our wish list buddy, so as you can help, please do! For you other folks reading this, he may look and sound like an old bear, but hes a great guy, with solid integrity, and really does have the goods as far as collectible older Randalls go. Look him up!
Chris Reeve was there with his front man, the ever so polite and knowledgeable Peter, promoting the newest in CRK fixed blade and folding knives. These folks are so damn nice, and make such a quality product that I found myself buying yet another CRK, this one a MK VI in the new Camo scheme. Again, a great knife, great folks, and a great price. Thanks guys!
Hmmm oh yes, before I forget, its not our style, but the micro-miniatures by Yvon Vachon need to be seen to be believed!!!!!! 1/100th scale fully working scaled down versions of todays popular knives! OMFG! This guy is unreal! I looked at his work under a 20 power magnifying lens and they were perfect! Ya just have to take a look if you ever get a chance WOW!!!
Anyhoo, the ladies were beautiful, the gentlemen were gracious, the knives were gorgeous, the weather was great, the food was tasty, the drinks were cold, and a good time was had by all!
If ya get the chance, plan ahead for next year, and youll have a truly memorable weekend!
For those of you I left out, sorry bout that .maybe next year eh? For those that I mentioned, thank you, both ladies and gentlemen, for we had a really good time thanks to you all!
