Who would you choose to make one? (I am not taking a poll..I want to have one made and this seemed like the best way to cut to the chase.)

truenorthknives.com has a nice muskrat by P.J. Tomes in stock. Why wait to have one made?

FE...thank you for the Truenorth link..looks like a good one.

Checked out the Tomes muskrat...I cannot understand why anyone would go to the trouble of creating such a beautiful knife and then use semi-crappy steel for the blades!

I'm not all that familiar with Sandvik 12C27 Stainless, and I don't know a lot about PJ Tomes. But he is a Master Smith, so there must be something to be said for that steel. Just for my own education, what is the down side of that steel? I agree with you...it is a good looking knife.

12C27 makes a great knife steel when heat treated correctly. P.J. knows what he is doing.

I've used it enough to totally disagree...you can heat treat it 'til you drop and you're still gonna end up with a steel which will cut, hold an edge, sharpen and generally perform at the level of AUS-6.

As for P.J. knowing what he's doing...so what?

Not to argue since I do not have any AUS6 slipjoints. But I do have sevearal from P.J. that I use. Don't really find them any better or worse than a few in ATS 34 that I use.

On the so what part, this is just my opinion and that is about all it is worth :). I just happen to know the man and his knives and think highly of both. Other folks may not come to the same conclusions. I think it would be good to get in touch with him and talk to him about what he does to 12C27 and why (since I have asked him the same question a while back liked the answer and purchased a knife that I have been very pleased with).

As the old saying goes, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." Applies here; IMO...YMMV.

Don, there are some folks using BG42 and forged 52100 that might foot the bill. (Check out Burk and Bradshaw off the top of my head.) I own some of their work and you might be happier with them.
