Muskrat

I second that (Bill Ruple) along with Joel Chamblin, Richard Rogers, Eugene Shadley.

If your not in a hurry: Tony or Reese Bose.

You could not go wrong with any of them and it would a very nice collection to have a muskrat from each of them.

All that said. P.J.'s work is very nice too and his 12C27 will also serve you well. You could always touch base with him to see if he would be intersted in making one exactly the way you want it.

I think if you contacted P.J. Tomes, he would be willing to make you a knife like that with a different steel.

Keith...I took your advice; here is P.J.'s reply:

<< Don,

I would be glad to make a stag handle 52100 muskrat and the price will be
. I do not give a delivery date but it should be 6 mo or less.
Feel free to check with me from time to time. If you have looked at my
web site you know what my stag looks like. www.tomesknives.com

Let me know if you want me to put you on my list , Thanks, P. J. Tomes >>

From what I've heard 12C27 is a Swedish Powdered steel similar to ATS34, the old standby for slipjoints. What is wrong with that?

I've owned a bunch of folders and kitchen knives from P.J. in 12C27 and always been pleased with them. It's takes a good edge and holds it reasonably well. Forged 52100 from a M.S. is certainly appealing too! I've noticed that P.J. gets charges a big premium for stag, and again for 52100, so they do tend to get up there in price and the work of some other makers starts to look more interesting. P.J. makes a good knife and you'll never work with a nicer guy, tho.

Carbon content of 12C27 is about .52 - .60%

Carbon content of ATS-34 is about 1.05%

"Similar" is not the adjective I would use comparing these two steels.
