So, I just got back from work on Sunday, freshly Riffed....a RIF is Reduction In Force...ie; laid off.

Have I mentioned that my wife is pregnant? #2 is due in early April.

Must be doin' awight though anyways. I was making a pot of chili and some Jalapeno cheddar corn bread for dinner when my son (who stayed home sick today) mentioned that he was done with his homework.

So I says "cool! ya' wanna turn on the television and see if the Simpsons are on or something?"

he ponders a moment before answering "nah...I think I'd rather listen to some Celtic music."

As I type this he is listening to Celtic music and sharpening the Puukko I made for him. After he's done with that he's trying to decide what book to read tonight. (he's only in the fifth grade, but reading on a Sophomore/Junior level)

Unemployed, overweight, and underskilled....but I must not be screwin' up too badly, eh?:D

RWS, good luck finding a job. scarry stuff not having work with a new one on the way. Congrats though on having a new one coming. :)

Though I agree, you must be doing something right with your child. :) I'm cooking dinner, doing a little cleaning and listening to Classical music on my computer. Next on the play list is Andian music. No TV for me tonight. Your sun reminds me of me a little. In middle school I tested at a hight school reading level and in High school a College level. I was a huge book worm. Hope he keeps it up.

Not bad at all.

I'll always remember the summer my wife 'failed to pass probation' for the State of Idaho job with Carter due in 2 months.

I wish this kind of thread could give me hope.
I am employed, I don't drink, do drugs, gamble, adulterize, beat my wife or any of the other reasons for which people lose their families, and yet...
Here I am, alone, havent seen my baby daughter in 6 months and I still don't know why.

You must be doing something right, but there is something else going on.
You married a good woman and you are lucky.
Be grateful for it. Be deeply grateful for it.

"The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet favor to men of skill..., but time and chance happen to them all"

RWS, glad to hear your good spirit in a challenging time.

Danny, still very grieved for you and with you. I can't imagine...

You live in Alaska, you don't need a job. Go shoot a moose!

Congrats on the new kid on the way. :D

EB- hummph!! that's illegal now ya' know!:grumpy: I was in ------------for pretty much all of moose and caribou season. You cannot imagine the frustration of sitting in an idling truck while ten thousand caribou cross the road in front of you, and not being able to shoot a single one of them.:D It aint all bad though, it gave me a chance to sneak in a nap now and then...:D (yes, a man can sleep while thousands of caribou engulf his vehicle)

Danny- You're right. I married a helluva good woman, and I do feel that I've had plenty of blind luck. I can't ever be grateful enough for what I have. If there were a way to share some of that blind luck with you, I'd do it. I truly wish the best for you.

I'm not too wraught up about the employment situation yet. I already had about half a dozen hooks baited and thrown out before I even left for R&R. Layoffs, rehires, nepotism, and gettin' "hooked up" by friends is just a way of life up there.I I guess if bein' oilfield trash were easy, it wouldn't pay so well!:D

Gonna be an eleven year spread between the two children. (Can you say oops!):o Oh well, as they say "Man makes plans...and God laughs...":D

I'm 12 years older than my sister. Unfortunately it took me 15 years to realize that she was no longer a little kid and we could be friends.:( On the bright side we are the best of friends now.:)

RWS, you should be very pleased with yourself. Your son sounds like a man of good character and depth. At that age, thats a heck of a thing.

Well Done, Sir.

Mac

addendum: If your son is into the medieval fantasy fiction genre (or just likes really good writing) I can't suggest strongly enough George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. The best serious writer I've ever read. Feel free to email me if you have any questions about content or what have you.

CONGRATS TO YOU SIR.......You have raised a child who loves music and likes to read, have a loving wife and you can cook to provide for them.....Jobs come and go but the job your doing with your family will last a lifetime. They will be there when the job is not.

RWS I'd expect as a parent that you're doing fine. We've kept up with you and its no suprise to me. Make some knives. A new job will come, and hopefully, it'll be one where you can stay at home with the family more.

I'll pray for it to happen.

And Danny has it right. A good woman is an important factor.

Just wanted to relay the news....

I called my head boss yesterday. He wasn't even aware I'd been laid off, and he was a bit displeased that I had been. His thoughts basically seem that yes, it's a bit slow right now, but he's got a core group he wants to keep- and you don't keep good people by laying them off just before the holidays and then asking them back. I'm returning to my job as regularly scheduled, with a lesson well learned.

Ya' see, I've been pondering jobs and trades alot- whether to basically commit myself to oilflield work for more money, etc. or whether to work for less and learn a trade I can bring back to town. (diesel mechanics, etc.) This....experience has given me a hands on lesson on how fickle and unfair oilfield work can be. I still love my job, still love my camp, and the guys I work with- But the need for diversification is well noted.

I'll learn whether #2 is internally or externally plumbed on my next R&R, and

#1 son (Jonathan) has decided that he wants to fix up my old Jeep for when he turns sixteen. (it'll take about six years to make that old heap function again too!):D (I'm very excited about this one!) And with a short coupled in Alaskan winters it'll be a little more challenging for him to go out and make me an early Grandparent!:D

I'm fixing to go forth and start my endless list of honey do's.

I'm happy.:D:D

a million thanks for all who have lended your support!

Great news RWS!!!! :D Being happy in the present is a great state too be in and not something always easily obtained. You are very blessed.:)

Thats good news bro. I agree on having skills to fall back on. Thats always been my plan also.

Outstanding. I'm truly glad that things worked out for you. I pray that they continue to do so.

Sounds like life is firing on all cylinders - congrats on the rehire, and it sounds like the young'uns are coming along nicely.

Danny - sometimes we play the hand we're dealt. You're doing an amazing job, too. A lesser person wouldn't be holding up at all.
