Must have knives in every collection?

I don't feel so new to knives, but probably a noob compared to most of you. I hear about some of your collections and I'm blown away that some of you have multiples of a favorite knife. So, I bow to your actual experience with the knives in the world.

My collection is growing, but modest. But I'm curious if you could recommend a few knives as "must haves" for every collection, what would they be? Just from gathering from the community, I'm probably going to assume a couple of these knives might include:

-Paramilitary 2
-Buck 110
-Benchmade 940
-Victorinox Cadet

What do you think? What do you think should be in every collection?

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to knives and what they like. But there are some knives are just globally liked by a large majority. The PM2 and 940 are definitely top notch. There is also the benchmade griptillian, spyderco manix 2, and a few Kershaws too. But it varies from person you person on what they see as a must have knife.

It doesn't work like that. Everyone has his own taste. Why I should buy PM2 if I already had 2 and sold both? Why Buck 110 if I don't like that knife? Only because they're popular doesn't mean they're liked by everyone. You buy a knife because you like it or because someone else like it?

Buy what you like. Use it or keep it as a safe queen. Customize it by yourself if you like and if you can.

What else? Maybe if you're collector, you can consider to buy a custom knife. It means knife which was build for your request and maybe even based on your project.

Only one important rule between knife collectors - don't buy clones/chinese knockoffs.

Some form of bowie... KaBar USMC, Buck 120, Randall 14, etc.

No such thing.

I happen to have two of the ones in your list (Buck 110 and Vic Cadet) and have no interest in the other two. And I would not buy the Buck 110 today. I have just had it for about 40 years so it's still around. But definitely not a must have for me.

Spiderco manix 2,
Kershaw camber,
ZT 0566,
Becker BK9

Gotta have em!
Cool thread

I'd say the iconic & the game changers.

Case or some form of slip joint SAK maybe
Buck 110
BM 710
Spyderco Military/PM2
Sebenza

But has others have said everyone will have their own likes, wants & needs in a knife. Hence my recommendation for those that set the standards by which others are judged.

Light fixed blade (Izula or neck knife)
Large chopper
4-5 inch belt knife
Sak
A flipper
Benchmade grip or spyderco folder

You have a good start with your list but, I would add a Vic Soldier/Pioneer. I love my Cadet, however, it can be a little small at times.

I would also add a good traditional to the list. Maybe a trapper or congress.

Don't forget to add a fixed blade. Everyone should have a FB in their collection.

I'm not looking for a checklist for myself, I just like these list threads sometimes. I actually have no interest in a Paramilitary 2, but might be interested in a Para 3. I've got a distinct taste... and I'm not trendy, but I like knives and appreciate knives that are sticking around for good reasons. Just interested in what you'd recommend.

Keep them coming.

folders or fixed ?

You must buy the knives you want!

So many different types and brands and makers...

I actually asked a "watch guy" years ago a similar question. "What kind of watch would you recommend"? I'm sure he could have rattled off dozens of watches but he didn't. He just told me it's a matter of personal opinion.

It's the truth though, I learned that the most popular and most sought after gear isn't always a good fit for me. But sometimes it is, and on that note I'll add buy a shirogorov!

:D

Ones with different locks

Spyderco PM 2
Benchmade griptilian
Victorinox
Sebenza
ZT flipper

Spyderco endura
BM 940 or griptillian
Pm2 is a good choice though I no longer own one so maybe not

I wanted a well rounded collection, but I also have two kids so I wanted to pass down to them both an example of different brands. So my goal was to get two iconic knives of different brands.

For example. PM2, and a Manix 2. 940 and a mini grip. 0560bw and a 0562cf. Then there's 2 M-16 crkt's, sak's, a couple Buck 110's and so on.

Pm2 or a para 3, Delica or endura, Recon 1, Ontario rat 1 or rat 2, morakniv companion, and something fancier.
