Must Have Leather Stamps

I just recently got into more detailed leather sheaths, and am curious on some of the more common stamps and patterns people use out there.

As of now I have the alphabet A-Z, 0-9, an iron cross, and the slanted basket weave. I'm not really fond of the basket weave. I know a lot of leather work is using imagination, but I just need some tips.

Examples of each would be great!

E294 is a versatile backgrounder

M884 is another backgrounder i like to use

D606 makes a very nice border

D447 takes some practice, but can achieve a beautiful border.

Those last 2 I was looking at, at Tandy leather. The D447 I'm guessing is all in the spacing. The D606 is going to be a definite purchase.

The tool Bruce is using in the video is a geometric. The very best geometrics come from Wayne Jueschke and they are very pricey $50 to $70 depending on the size. Similar stamps (Craftool Pro) series 82286, 82290 are $29.99. 69008 is a three different size set and the set sells for $27.99

Regarding the Basket weave tools…..The slanted basket weave will improve you memory as it will cause you to remember cuss words you thought were long forgotten. I suggest you get X811 (66811) and X500 (6500), both straight basket weave stamps, then take a look at the larger sizes if you need them. These are the now standard Craftools and sell for about $10.

All the prices I listed for Tandy products are full retail and you may be able to do better than that on sale or with some other discount.

Go slowly and add your tools a couple at a time and remember there is a reason the more expensive tools cost more and that is because they are BETTER. More precisely made and better quality metals. Precision of manufacture is particularly important in geometrics and basket weaves. They must be perfectly square and straight and the more expensive tools are. The cheaper cast tools….not so much.

Good Luck

Paul

Thanks sheathmaker. I will be purchasing both of the straight basket weaves, and probably the D606 for a border tool.
