Hello all. I'm new to the forum and thought I would ask a question I have been thinking about since deciding to start a knife collection. I have always had and used pocket knives just never thought about collecting them until about 3 months ago. I decided to start and have bought several so far but wanted to get some ideas from the "experts".

So which knives offer great bang for the buck? Which knives should everyone have in their collection?

Just a note: I prefer flipper knives and really am starting out by collecting knives in the $100-$200 range. My fav so far is my ZT 0770. Love it!!!

Folks will say that you "have to have";
Benchmade this, ZT that, Spydercos and then nothing else matters, a PM2, a Sebenza, etc.

but simple fact is, the ONLY things you need for a folding knives collection, is folding knives... Doesn't matter what brands, what designs, what price ranges, what steels, etc.

Preferably you collect ones that YOU like and can appreciate... Be it Bucks and Bökers, or CRKs and Stryders, or anything in between or above and beyond. Remember that, it's what YOU like that matters, not what everyone else likes, and if you like what you have, you're doing well in your collecting.

There are a plethora of great knives to choose from.

Thanks for the reply. I know what I prefer as to knives (flippers, g10 handles, 3-3.5" blade) but was curious as to what some forum favs are in the $100-$200 range. Being a newbie ya got to ask this sort of stuff lol.

How about the Kershaw Leek? The Damascus one should be just under $100. No G10, but it is a flipper with a 3" blade. I have the Elmax and the 14C28N variants, one is a frame-lock, one's a liner-lock, both are solid knives.

I have had a Kershaw Onion design and it was a nice knife. I think mine was the Scallion. Good overall knife for $35. I don't really like damascus blades but thanks for the reply

Check out the Zero Tolerance (ZT) 0808 - you'll love that one!

The 0808 and the 0450 were both on my radar. I don't have an all titanium knife and definitely need one. Great idea thanks

Carbon Fiber Kershaw Skyline, Boker Urban trapper, various flavors, Benchmade 300sn, Lot's of ZT's, Spyderco Southard, Positron, Dice, Domino, Mantra, Mantra 2 all come to mind.

Aside from the big name front runners, which will get plenty of mentions I'm sure; off the beaten trail, kizer has been making a name for themselves as a quality made made Chinese brand...

HTM (kirby lambert) Snap is high on my wishlist currently.

I agree even though I have little knowledge about knives. However I do have a bit more knowledge about watches and footwear believe it or not and I find the same to be true with them as well. The more you learn and the sooner you find out what you like and are able to make your own decisions the happier you'll be. The more research and effort you put into it the sooner you'll probably be able to start making your own informed decisions.

Yeah, the Kershaw flippers are pretty nice, I have a pile of Cryos and other Kershaw budget flippers sitting on my desk at home right now. Check out the ZT0560/0561, they got the smoothest flipping action I've experienced.

Thanks all for input. I figured the bigger names would get a lot of praise, even though I have limited time with them being new to collecting I already know which brand is my fav so far (ZT). I have heard that the Kizer brand is a well received brand for the most part and also a brand I think is called Reana or Reada is another one to check out I guess

The Positron really caught my eye and the Southard as well

If you like flippers, try a CRKT Ripple. I love mine, what a great value, what a great cutter, what a beautiful knife!

I think the Spyderco Manix XL in S30V steel is a bargain at about $100.00 if you like the larger blades, this one comes has a 4" blade.

I saw a Manix 2 in translucent blue that was super nice looking for a larger knife
