Must I sharpen Coal Creek Forge Hawks?

I just ordered 2 poll hawks from Coal Creek forge for a friend and I. We were told that they would be sharpened, but my question is, once we receive the hawks, do you recommend that we sharpen them after every throwing session, or should we sharpen them right off that bat? We are pretty new when it comes to dealing with hawks, so thanks for the help.

if i am understanding your question correctly you will only need to sharpen them when they get dull by your standards.

that means one person might want to change the edge angle for better performance as a utility tool while a person who is throwing might prefer a edge that is more obtuse for easily taking abuse. ymmv

Thanks, now that I reread my post, it was worded a bit odd. So when it comes to throwing, how would I want my blade to be sharpened? With a more convex edge?

use the hawks right off, as is, is my advice.

Steve knows a lot.

if your tastes are different than his, only mod the edge after trying out the custom edge.

that's what i would do.

Here's my experience with one of Steve's spike hawks - it rocks right out of the box for throwing. In my very, extremely, minimal, limited experience throwing hawks, I've found that sticking an appropriate target (i.e. fairly soft) doesn't require an extremely sharp edge. With that said, I like my EDC knives hair-whittling sharp so decided to put a bit of a better edge on my spike hawk. It doesn't take much effort to get mine to pop hair off my arm, so IMO you do not NEED to sharpen one of Steve's hawks for just throwing, but it you want to, go ahead - it will take a really good one, by axe standards.
