I am going to NY city in a few weeks and just wanted to get an idea if there are any suggested places to visit for the custom knife and gun fan.

I wish Barrett Smythe was still around. I am sure that would have been an amazing place to visit.

Thanks in advance for your advice

I second the Arms & Armor section at the Met. Amazing place to visit. I haven't been there in a while but last time there the Japanese arms section contained an amazing display of blades.

A third recommendation for seeing the MET!!! The artwork seen on the arms in their collection boggles the mind! I could have spent a week in just those couple rooms... You may not get to fondle the blades there, but don't miss the chance to go.

I used to live just down 81st Street from the Met.

The ancient collections are amazing: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome.
But then, the entire museum is so large, you couldn't walk through every hall in one day.

If you ever get the chance, stop by the north end at night, and see the Egyptian temple lit up inside the glass outer wall.

Holland and Holland has some retail space in NYC. Thay usually have a decent number of very nice guns there. No knives though.

Well my trip got moved up a bit and I am already back. Thanks to everyone for the recommendations here.

The Met was a great experience for me. Another hobby of mine is guitar, so it was great to see the armor collection, weapons, and the musical instruments section. Big thanks for the referral here!!

I made it to Paragon and got to see some very nice inventory.

I'd have to say that Mastersmiths had the edge on them with his excellent inventory of custom work. Bill was very pleasant to talk to and I definitely am happy to have had the experience of visiting his shop.

Also, take look at the bottom of this thread for another wonderful experience I had in NY:
