No ,that's muzzle flash ! Blast is the sound , flash is the light. Higher quality powders have flash suppressants. If you close your eyes when you shoot [as many do !!] you won't notice the flash !!

Ah yes. The fireball of a short tubed Mosin-Nagant. And I suppose it had that nice roar that made anyone nearby look to see if your gun blew up?

Was that shot taken right at the firing moment and before recoil and muzzle lift? Or is it a composite image? You just look to calm to have just touched off a short tubed Mosin.

I had a Model 38 in my hand to buy the other day at my local shop when I notced a Marlin 782 .22 mag with an old Bushnell scope that had just come in. When I asked the owner what he was gonna ask for it he said, "Amos, we're looking right at $100 for it." It came home with me and the Mosin will have to wait. I still want the 38. Just a handy, rugged cabine firing a capable, historical cartridge. I used to have a 91 with the octagon receiver (or is it hexagon, I forget).

no, thats not a composit. we try to get good shots every weekend. sadly enough that was about the only decent shot we got today, first time trying to capture the mosin before. notice the garand clip ejections and flying brass in these older ones.

KaBar,

I love that pic, as well as the others. Especially that rifle. I am wanting one to go with my 91/30.

I see you still don't have safety glasses to wear while you are shooting. I hope you don't have to learn the hard way some day. :(

My buddy has a piece of lead imbedded in his cheek that may give him problems in his older age. :(

Keep the great pics coming.

Are you shooting at the OutBack close to Mcpherson Kansas. If it is not, it looks really close. The owner there is a super guy.

I have only been to the OutBack a couple of times. The setup is is very much like that. Now that you say it is not I can see some of the differences. I give the OutBacka thumbs up if you are ever in Kansas. Like I say the owner is a really good guy.

Now that Kansas has concealed carry I will go to the OutBack for my training. He trains and qualifies a number of local P.D.'s. They fired their 50 caliber while I was there. Needless to say I was impressed as he--.

I thought blast encompassed both light, sound and dirt thrown up from the pressure change at the muzzle. Hence snipers putting down wet fabric in front of their rifles.

Now I got to go research...

Yeah +1, and shove those foamies as far in your ear canal as you can without hitting your ear drum..... Your hearing will thank you.

...then clap a pair of good ear defenders over the top of them.

I used to shoot with an old sergeant of mine who was an Elton John fan ( ). Due to years of poor hearing protection, he couldn't hear a damn thing from Elton's left keyboard hand.

If you want fireball pictures, merely wait until half light (or turn the firing point lights off), set up your camera on a tripod & use a long exposure or the "B" setting.

As a former professional photographer I both appreciate the photos and can appreciate only getting one such to come out. Getting the timing right is a combination of skill, luck, and lots of shots.

Hehehe.. Is Withers Burrows and Mark Stanley still around there ?
How about Tye River, Jim Wheeler, Dickie Steen, or Jim Bristor ?

I took many, many a first place trophy out of there for smallbore silhoutte rifle and small and big bore handgun.

Withers would be standing there with his notebook and a zillion dollar custom rifle and I'd pull out any old test fire piece from my repair shop and smoke hiz azz !
Oh.. Yeah.. He loved me :D
Hey ! Is that gong still at the 300 yard mark ?
Go look at it ! See where I hit it with the .50 :D
Been nearly 25 years ago..
