I feel like Red Green when he bought his bus for 50 dollars. Sure, the logo is smeared out, its got pitting and one edge is chipped, but for 5 DOLLARS? What a deal! Look for the stuff with a mashed up logo, the collectors don't like them :D

Question is, do you know what company actually made that axe, and just put their (MWHC Co) name on it?

Not sure. Could it be the Mann edge tool Co.? Kelly works? I know Kelly also made "hand made" axes. I'm leaning towards Kelly :D

That would be Marshall Wells Hardware Co....Duluth Minnesota late 1800 early 1900

Marshall Wells was founded in Duluth, MN, then expanded to Manitoba and Washington state. Here's a brief history. http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/nemhc/guides/s3614.htm

And here's a few catalog pages featuring some hatchets circa 1910.

I've never been able to verify if M-W Hardware actually made their axes or not. I've got a later M-W Zenith dayton that's very close in pattern to a Kelly Perfect. Anyone else know?

They were a hardware company, not a manufacturer, so no, they did not supply their own axes. They were made for them. Kelly, Collins, and Welland Vale were some suppliers.

A little more info found on this one.....
