I havent been around for a while...

Since there's the german Messerforum i spent more time over 'there' learning something about knife making.

I just wanted to show you my first two pieces to get some opinions on them from overseas. :)

#1

Length: ~ 180 mm (7 6/8 inch)
Thickness: ~ 3 mm (1/8 inch)
Material: D2
Hardness: 60 HRC
Handle: some glass-fibre material (looks like carbon fibre)

I know the surface looks crap, but at least no one doubts that i really made this one on my own...

#2

Lenght: ~ 220 mm (8 5/8 inch)
Thickness: ~ 3 mm (1/8 inch)
Material: D2
Hardness: 60 HRC
Handle: like #1

The only tools i used were a hand-saw, some files and a drilling machine (i had to borrow from my father).

The qualities of the pictures is a little poor, they dont show the great look of the handle material, i am still practicing with this new digital camera.

Thanks for watching...

Jester,
Those are terrific looking knives! The overall fit and finish of each knife is great. I see your progress in craftsmanship from the first to the second knife although I really like both designs. Either one looks worthy of purchase to me.:D
Your work is very inspiring to a beginner like me!

Looks pretty good. I like the shape of the handles, looks like it gives good grip.

Looks like you are off to a great start. Those are two very nice designed knives that you have done well bringing to life. I agree with Arkham Drifter about the progression of your craftsmanship.
That's a darn good hand finish of D2 on your second one. Keep to the grindstone, look forward to seeing more.
Happy Holidays,
Greg

I like them both! They look like sound, servicable knives that should give years of hard use.
Thanks for sharing :)

Dave

I'm impressed! lot's of improvement from #1 to #2. Both look like you will get lots of use from them. Good Job!

Thanks a lot!

I am a little surprised about this positive feedback. :D

I was hoping (and fearing) for some critics and hints, what to do different next time (except the points i already know).

At the moment i am working on my #3 and #4 (Kitchen knives).
I will give them to my girlfriend as a christmas present. She always has this doubtfull look in her face, when i start talking about knifemaking, now i can show her, that this hobby is not "completely useless"... :D

Jester, congratulations on two nice knives! I really like the blade shape on #1, and your filed groves to add to the grip on your handles. I respect your hard work, using hand tools on D2 deserves an award of some kind!

Thanks for sharing your work, and please visit here more often!

Dave

OK Jester, I'll insult you. The only two things that come to mind are the finish and the secondary angle. The finish is OK for a work knife but you need to go a little further, get rid of the deep marks and finish with a satin sanding. The secondary bevel are a personal prefrence but I would like a little less angle.

Other than those minor things, I think they are very very good. You have a lot of talent.;)

Good work!! Personally I think you are crazy to try to make knives without $4000 worth of power tools. You must be very determined to tackle the task and with D2. My goodness. Sell #5 and 6 and buy a tool or two so you dont wear out your body.

I will not fault the finish, My # 12 falls somewhere between the 2 and I still have it in my possesion after 5 years of hard use.
May yours serve you as well.
keep up the good work. Eric

Gee Eric. I didn't fault it either untill he insisted I insult him. It's the only thing I could find!:D :D

I know the finish looks a little crappy... :(

I did not expect it to be that hard to put a finish on the steel after it was hardened.

I am an absolute beginner, but i am learning every day... :)
