as mentioned in a previous post, i was edc carrying two slip joints. after giving it lots of thought, i wondered if i could get away with carrying just one--namely my '08 vic alox soldier. i just seem to get so much more use of this knife--especially its tools. my only concern is putting a better edge on the blade. i've just been using an inxpensive water stone but it's difficult for me to use due to paralysis in my left hand and arm. perhaps i'll try finding a professional sharpener on another forum place such as 'blade/shop' ect.

my best regards to all in this forum,

brian

Brian,

I'm moving this over to Maintenance because I'm willing to bet that one of the stalwarts there will make short work of that task on your behalf.

For light maintenance, I suggest Victorinox pocket sharpener. the angle of the slot is 40 inclusive, which ahould do well with the softer steel they use.

Some wet/dry sandpaper, lightly glued adjacent to the edge of any convenient fixed surface (bench, table, board clamped to a table, etc.) might be an easy and inexpensive solution. I'm assuming the main issue is being able to use only your right hand to sharpen, and not a skill/technique issue? Sandpaper might also be glued or wrapped around a cylindrical surface, like a dowel held in a vise or inserted into a benchtop (ala Sharpmaker style). The nice thing about Victorinox's steel is, it's pretty easy to maintain. The wet/dry sandpaper should make quick work of it.

If you end up needing a good edge on it and can't find someone closer, I'd be more than happy to put it right for you. I'm in Washington.

For one-handed operation, it would be very hard to beat the sandpaper on the desk, followed perhaps with a Sharpmaker for keeping the edge in good shape. It would be simple enough to clamp the Sharpmaker's base down so that it doesn't slide around, and the actual sharpening uses one hand only in any case.
