They gave him a gift certificate for $50 at the Simi Valley Town Center mall, because he was wearing his helmet....... I probably will never have to remind him again to put his brain bucket on before riding. I always seem to lean towards defending our (as well as all) LEO's when they are bad mouthed in any media, and this is just one small reason why. I have no family and only one distant friend who is an LEO, but it always makes my stomach sick when I hear of an officer wounded or killed in the line of duty. To all LEO's, Firemen, Coast Guard, etc. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukka! Please be safe and always come home in one piece and on your feet at the end of your shifts.

how can CA pay for that? but nonetheless that is pretty cool for the LEO to reward you kid for doing the right thing.

That is really neat. Lego or computer games?!

Last year we got pulled over after a toll into a police block, they were targeting drinking driving, unsafe cars,,,, and handing out a packet for each adult in the car containing a chocolate bar, pamphlets and a DIY breathalyser kit. Great strides in South African Policing.

Yep that evening back in the office digs we took out the kits and put them to the test. 1.5 beers in half an hour and I am at the legal limit. People forget body weight matters. 2 beers in an hour and I remain at the limit. I don’t drive after more than one anyhow as my car is my livelihood.

That was the only thing they have given me other than a ticket. It spoke volumes.

Now THAT is a very good program. Congrats to your son and to you and your wife for not buckling to the peer pressure thing and permitting him to ride with no helmet.

We have a similar program here in our community, and my two girls got a gift certificate for an ice cream cone last summer when the three of us were on a walk/ride, and they had their helmets on. It helped them both not to be afraid of police officers and to see them as the "good guy".

In one way, my stepson who got the gift card, is our "most likely to not respect authority" child. I catch him breaking the rules the most. In fact, he mentioned "bacon" in reference to the police that morning, when he got the gift card in the afternoon. My wife and I reminded him of his bacon comment, and I asked him if while he was getting the gift card did he thank "Officer Bacon." We scolded him for his derogatory remark towards the police as he said it that morning. So, I wish one of my other kids would have gotten the gift card, but somehow, maybe it is best that he got it, it may help to reel him in, to not be so disrepectful to the authorities.

I do have to say that he is a gracious kid in some ways, he used the card to feed his friend, and his step brothers, my sons with the card. So, it is all good in the Simi hood. I think we have a great police force in Simi.

nice story, thanks for sharing with us.

i wish we had funds to do something similar, but alas, we are taking furlough days. we did do thanksgiving baskets and christimas presents through donations, but its not the same as a seamingly random encounter that ends with a nice gesture.

That's pretty sweet, I'm going to start riding my bike with out a helmet in Simi Valley soon :D
