Right now , I own around 300 edged weapons and have owned 1000's in my lifetime but I've NEVER owned a Khukri before.

Never to late in life to start , right --- so I got one with a little "bling" to it and was VERY happy to see when I got it that its a BEAST of a User !!!

Now I want a lighter longer "Kobra" type --- any advise ???

Great score. That thing looks massive.

There are also Mallas and Chitlangis if you're looking for slimmer blades. What will it be for, or what kind of features are you looking for? That will help narrow down the list.

Hiya Q ,

Thanks for the reply. I am semi-skilled in Eskrima/Arnis/Kali so i'd be looking for maybe a 18" blade , much thinner and lighter then the YCS , and more "straight" as to be able to thrust/stab better.

Wow, beautiful set DaBird! I really love the inlays in the handles. Was this a custom piece?

Hiya Q ,

If you're used to the standard 26" rattan sticks, you might find most of the kukris (even the thinner ones) very different in balance and execution. HI "thin" blades tend to be at least 1/4" at the spine, and the recurve and belly make for a much different balance. If you've trained more on the shorter knives/ karambits or other shorter blades, I've found the smaller kukris (such as the pen knives) are much easier to transition from training blades to the real deal.

Then again, it also depends on your grip preference and style on the training blades. My brother (who has more professional training) finds the 18" Foxy Folly types ideal for double sinawali, while I think it'd be way too bulky. His personal style though is more direct and linear, so like I said, it really depends.

You might just catch the HI bug and find that you will be on a never ending search for the "one" (or for double sinawali, the "two").

EDIT: if you like reverse grip with the off hand in a utility role, the 12" salyan works pretty well, at least for me :D

Qeth --- a nice surprise to see you are also a Eskrimador !!!

I have a total of four sets for Espada Ya Daga -- one is a cool full custom set I had made by a guy in Texas -- but my "main" blade is/would be a Barong -- of which I own about 10. The blades range from 12" to almost 24" on them.

I have sorta "got used" to the YCS Kuk after about 2-3 hours of drills with it -- but it IS a somewhat heavy BEAST.

I researched some and now know that there are Kuks for field use and Kuks for more warlike useage. As well as "light" and "heavy" duty ones. I guess that it will be a search for "THE One" and my guess is this time next year I'll have enough Kuks to outfit a small army !!! lol

Again -- I do THANK YOU for your replies.

Shaggy --- no , this is not a custom Kuk -- my understanding is that from time to time , HI will get a "run" of them -- I've seen 3 or 4 different handle styles etc.on the forums.

Thanks again -- Bird

Nice pix, thank you for sharing
