A triangle shaped box arrived today, via USPS. A 15 inch BAS. Very nice kuk, very nice indeed. Hairline cracks in handle which I knew before I bought it, but still rock solid. Good polish, awesome sheath. Will post pics later today when I find my camera. One question, the kami mark appears to be a coffee cup, or may be a drum with a handle? Anybody know this mark? Oh and thanks Yangdu for answering my numerous questions, you're awesome!

Now that you mention it, it does look like a beer mug! Amazing to think that this used to be a leaf-spring from a vehicle. Wow!

I also just got basically the same BAS as my first HI; beer mug, hairline cracks, and everything. Any recommendations for treating the handle so the cracks don't get worse?

I pressed in epoxy and didn't worry about the excess till it dried. I then sanded the epoxy down till I hit horn again then smoothed everything out with finer grit. I like how the areas that had cracks give the otherwise plain dark horn character marks. I've read applying lanolin helps liven up the horn but I have yet to find a store that I frequent or that is nearby that carries it.

Epoxy is said to help with the crack.
But if all else fails, I am sure the handle can be replaced. Just look up a local knifemaker or contact someone on the forum.

Congrats for your new kukri. You certainly got it easier than I did (costums and such).

Mine has got a mug too, although mine is a 17" CAK monster. Same maker I guess. So far, my only problem with it is balance (waay forward, although I guess it is supposed to have and I am getting used to it) and cleaning the rust off (it is an annoyance).

hope you enjoy your first khuk! make sure to read the HI safety thread... and WELCOME! I just got my first Khuk not long ago, and since then I have bought 2 more...tibetan knife and a Chitlangi (by Tirtha- it has this "mug" you speak of). Noone is safe from HIKV it seems...even broke people like me. lol

Congrats on the new Khukri! It will serve you well for many years.

My 1st Khukri was a used 15" Ang Khola from near the begining of HI. When I got it from Uncle Bill about 10 years ago the horn handle had some cracks in it. I filled the cracks with Black epoxy (J.B. Weld) then sanded the handle. There have been no problems with those cracks and no new ones have formed. :) Uncle Bill used to say that a properly fixed horn handle is probably stronger after fixing then before the cracks developed and that normally you won't have any more problems with it. So fix it, test it and you should be good for life!
