Here are my 2nd and 3rd knives.

The 2nd knife is a upswept skinner made from a planter blade. 7-1/2" long overall with a 3-3/4" blade. Beautiful stabilized redwood burl handles, with mosaic pins.

the 3rd is a short, fat skinner made from a planter blade. 6-1/4" long overall. 2-3/4" blade with dark walnut handles from Burlsource. Also with mosaic pins and red and black liners. It has filework i did on it also.

Real nice work for your second and third knife. I really like the shape of the upswept skinner. I have a similar design on a knife I make.
The other one is no slouch either.
Now you got to make a sheath. To me a knife without a sheath is like a woman with no clothes, "NAKED"!
Now mind you, I didn't say that was always a bad thing, but naked is naked!!!:D

Awsome knives, especialy for only the 2nd and 3rd!

Beutifull wood too, and a great finish on the blades.

nice knives for your second and third one. do the discs have the following numbers on them? SS0032 & N214190 if so, its 1075 and i sent some off for testing. i have used the discs for years and it makes for some good knives. i have one that amazes everyone that stops by and gets to play with it. if you want to see the analysis results send me an email. rje196021@gmail.com

The numbers on mine are A71827 and 04326 LLB. When i looked them up the only info i could find said the steel was a high carbon boron. When i contacted John Deere they said they couldn't tell me anything about composition as it was proprietary.

is there a circle with the letters jd inside? if they say "made in mexico" its too low carbon to make a good knife. i have some and wasted time on 3 knives that wouldnt heat treat no matter what i tried.

i have some 1/8" discs that i forgot about till now. i have to head out in a few so i'll go check the numbers on them and see what they are and let you know later. the ones i posted the numbers to above are 3/16" thick. if the ones i have are the same as yours, then they are 1075 also.

They have the circle with "jd" inside and are made in Spain. i will have some made in U.S.A. also, i just haven't went and picked those up yet from the farmer i got them from. He said he has maid a few knives out of them and they hold a great edge. I haven't heat treated them because they are already head treated and hardened, but to unknown hardness. And i dont have any experience with heat treating yet.

the discs i get rc around 56 and a file will cut them but not too easy. when i get done heat treating a blade, a coarse file slides and wont leave a mark and the rc is between 63-65. if you make any more i would find a way to heat treat them or send them out to be done.
are the discs you have that are made in spain real rusty or only slightly? do they have a good, long, crisp ring to them when lightly struck with your knuckles? compare them to the ones made in the usa. compare the numbers i posted to be sure of what you have.

they are only slightly rusty and it rings like a bell when i tap it with my knuckle. i havent gotten any of the U.S.A. made ones yet.
