Hi, It's been a while since I posted my first knife....Here's my second and third. The little drop point is 5.5" overall, O1 polished blade, red jigged bone scales and a canted right hand cross-draw sheath.
The Tanto is 10" overall, 3/16" blade O1 bead blast finish, 303 stainless bolsters dovetailed with burgundy linen micarta scales. No sheath yet, I just finished it today.
P.S. This is really my 3rd & 4th...no.2 didn't look so good, it's in the tackle box :) Richie

Not much on that tanto to stop mr. hand from meeting mr. blade ;)

They are well made from the looks of it though. I always hesitate to be too praising of online knife pictures though, cause you never know what sort of heat treat quality you have...

Well unless you're cutting with a knife you don't know what kind of quality heat-treat it has...

They look damn nice to me. Obviously you're taking great pride in doing quality work right at the start...they look great!
Thanks for sharing,
Nick

Darn fine if you ask me! They "look" great. Nice grind lines on the Tanto,, maybe not as practical as possible,,,but hey , if everything was just practical we would have no art or music , right? Thanks for inspiring me,,,;) ,,,,,,JM

Rich, those look great! I particularly like that tanto, congratulations on two sweet knives. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to your next work.

Dave

Thanks a lot guys... After three drop points I thought I would try a tanto. The bolsters were a lot of fun:) As for the heat treat I did it myself and they came out hard as a honeymoon pecker, then I tempered @400f one hour two times....I was pleased:D Richie

I wish mine looked that good when I was at those numbers.
As for the heat treat,Who does yours. That way We all would know about that.
Other wise those are some fine looking knives you have made,Keep up the great work.

Bruce, man that's a nice looking banner! The Dragon slayer looks fantastic. I might have to try a Bowie next :) Have you always forged your blades? or did you start out with stock removal? BTW Thanks for all the tutorials,I've been looking at them for a while, they are a big help to us new makers....Richie

Richie,

Great job job!!! I'm working on my 3rd knife right now, it's almost a twin of your tanto! I'll post pics when I'm done. I really like a bead blast finish, but I was wondering how well it works on O1? Rapid accumulation of rust is what I'm concerned about. I have a buch of O1 to work with and it would would be nice to use that type of finish once in a while.

Also love the drop point :D

Patrick

Thanks Patrick, My biggest problem with O1 is what kind of finish I should use.....I lacquered the tanto right after bead blast, just heated the blade a little maybe 150f the sprayed a couple of coats Sheffield lacquer. I'm sure it would wear off in hard use, but it would be really easy to reapply.......Richie

Nice looking knives! The grinds on the tanto are great. As for finish on the beadblast surface. I have seen Tom Anderson's method firsthand. Immediately after beadblast, do not touch the blade or it will contaminate with dirt. Rather, hang it by a wire and spray it generously with WD-40 and let it soak in and dry. Do it twice. That's all there is to it. The blade will resist dirt and be easy to clean after that. For a carbon steel blade you may want to reapply fairly often. Keep up the good work!

Richie,Thanks for the kind words about the banner..
When I first started making knives I didn't have any help except for blade magazine ...So I started with the stock removal methode,By using files and the kitchen table as a work bench.I made myself work on one step at a time ,like making some knives and when I liked the grinds I then tried to master the guards then the handles then I went and forged. That way I wasn't trying to learn to much at one time and I was making the knives and getting excited after each one.Now I still try to make each one better than the last one.It keeps me challenged that way.

Richie, Good job on both knives. Good even grind lines, nice shape on the hunter. I have never made a tanto before before because of the tip. You seem to have it right IMO.

I just got home from the SouthEastern Custom Knife Show where I got to see these knives in person. The pics really don't do them justice. The fit and finish are AWESOME. Richie did an excellent job. If he keeps doing this kind of work then we can expect to have another successful knifemaker among us.

Hey Richie,
It was great seeing you again. Come on by the shop whenever you can. You are always welcome.

Thanks Barry, It was really great talking with you and Phillip. I can't wait till I get a chance to come and visit. I was glad to see the Jones brothers win the award for the best tactical folder at the South Eastern custom knife show! Take care, Richie

Rich
