my $3.49 knife experience

I was at a farm store recently that had a bucket of knives by the register, your choice for $3.49.

I happen to pull one out while completeing my purchase. It looked odd when I pulled it out. The blade was closed, but the liner was on the wrong side (for a right handed knife). I opened it up and immediately figured out what happened.

Somone had opened it, and the liner snapped all the way past the blade, then when they closed it the lined bent around to the wrong side of the blade all the way down.

I told the guy he should throw this knife away, I don't think he understood what the problem was.

The guy shrugged his shoulders and I left it open (and jammed) on the counter. I'm pretty sure it said china on the side, stylistically somewhere approximating one of those slim gerber models.

I hope you washed your hands before handling any of your good knives. They can smell knives from China you know? :)

Was it a tractor supply company store (TSC) ?
Our local TSC has a different variety of crap knives at the register every time I go in. Its friggin scarey how many of them they must be selling! They have some nice Schrade old timers and stuff too (some even unconditionally garaunteed, replaced even if you lose it!)

The favorite CRAP brand there is Cuttin Horse Knives who specialize in knockoffs of the spyderco delica and schrade old timer slipjoints.
They had a bucket of knockoff Delicas at the counter one day when I was there with my dad. I pulled one out and snapped it open with my left hand and pulled a REAL delica out of my pocket and snapped it open with my right hand at the same time and said "notice any resemblance here?"
My Dad busted out laughing and the clerk had a blank look on his face.
"Whadya mean  "

me- "THIS is a real spyderco, THOSE are cheap copies, see the difference" (handed him the delica)

"DAMN, thats a nice knife! ....man...an I bought 4 of THOSE things"

Funny that you mention knock off Spydies. I just got back from work (local hardware store) and seeing a knockoff Ladybug.

Alot of times I see guys come in with Spyderco Jesters, or Ladybugs. Victorinox Classics I see alot on peoples keychains too. So its a common sight to see quality knives on the keychain. Well this gentleman walked in to have a key made, and while I was copying the key for him I noticed the Ladybug ripoff on his keychain. The difference in quality is astounding to be honest. The handles were either really bad FRN or not FRN at all because they where chipped and had little flakes of plastic hanging on them... Also instead of a thumbhole it has a little peice of plastic glued on as a thumbstud. Pretty pathetic, and made me a little sick.:barf: :barf: :barf:

Those Spydie knock-offs seem to be everywhere...a few years ago my dad gave me a Delica clone. Back then I didn't even know that its design was a blatant copy (well, at least they replaced the hole with a plastic thumbstud).
It held up surprisingly well, the back-lock was relatively solid. It was duller than most butter knives though.

When I learned more about quality knives I just threw the Delica knock-off in the round file.

Thanks, I knew that those handles didn't look like the good stuff! Thanks for the confirmation.
