I spent the day in the mountains saturday with the family and we all had a great time. With some close supervison and plenty of disaproving looks from my wife I let my 4 year old do some hacking on some tree branches. It seemed to start what I hope is a lifelong love for knives. Ever since, he has been following me around begging me to let him play with my knives and to get him some of his own.

Well I am not THAT irresponsible, but I figured I could put something together that would tide him over for a while. I spent a few minutes with the jigsaw and I let him run the power sander to take the rough edges off. I made him a copy of all my beckers; a 14, 17, 2 and 9 and a Kukri machete we had played with. We had a blast working on the project together and here you go.

I had so much fun with it I even made myself a 2 and used the dremel to put a few extra details on it. It took longer for the paint to dry than it did to cut these out. He loves his new Beckerwoods! Make some with your kids, they will love working on the project together and playing with their new toys.

I hope he is hooked for life (and that he doesn't do too much damage to the house or his siblings with them).

They look great!

I did something similar a few weeks back during a bout of insomnia. I carved a BK14 out of some red oak for my 5 year old:

Hope he enjoys the hell out of em!

These are all super awesome. I don't have kids yet, but I as well will be getting them into knives early.

That's an awesome thing to do for your boy.
Looks like he's having a blast with them.
My hat is off to you sir!

That is an awesome idea. Wish I'd thought of that when mine were younger. I just let my kids play with the real things, under my supervision and out of the wife's line of sight! BTW.....they still have all their fingers and toes.
Cheers

Man, that is an awesome idea !! I'm gonna have to borrow it. Mine is only 3, but he absolutely loves it when I get out my box of knives. He got a cheap plastic Victorinox for Xmas, but it's a piece of crap. He would love one of these. I had thought about taking a sander to one of my Moras and rounding the tip and dulling the edge, but for some reason, that seems a little sketchy.

That's great! Reminds me of the plastic mini-chainsaws that Husky sells that growl when you pull the trigger...:D

Of course, back in the dinosaur age when I was 4 I already had a hatchet and a knife, and got my first .22 for Christmas when I was in 7th grade. That might explain a lot, come to think of it....

This is why I love this forum. I get to see that I'm not crazy or at least I:m not alone in my insanity:D Thanks Dax & Geek!

Thats a great idea!

While it gives them something to play around with, it should help to develop a respect for cutting tools. Something along the lines like "Well if they see that I am responsible with these, then someday they will let me have a real one."

lol... now that is awesome! my 4 yr old girl would love a wood 14 painted in pink! very cool. thanks for sharing

I love these threads...I almost want to make some wood Beckers just for fun.

Nice thought and project man, always good to get the kids started early, before Beer, Babes and Teenage Angst interferes.

Some people are alcoholics and can't stand to be around alcohol because they'll relapse and pick up where they left off. I'm the same way but with woodworking. Now that I've seen this I feel the irresistible need to cut some wooden knives once again.

My grandpa gave me my first knife when I was five. A lock back that says "lil hoss" on the blade. Needless to say my parents were not really happy about it. They never took it away and there has been a knife in my pocket ever since. This is a great idea and I will have to do the same with my little girl and boy.

Perfect idea. My son just got a set of plastic tools and due to this thread, will get some wooden knives too!!
