Mr. Postman delivered my 42 and 42s!!!!!!!!
They are so sweeeeeeeeeeetttttttt!!!!!!!! My lord they just feeeeeel goood holding them in your hand. BM lived up to the slogan with these. 42 is #170 pre-production and the 42s is 119 of the first production run. Just took them out of the box and took a peak, drooled awhile and put them right back in, these things are screaming to be "FLIPPED" and I just don't trust myself! My have to put them in a safety-deposit box or something cause I swear they are calling out to me as I write this, "COME PLAY WITH ME! COME PLAY WITH ME! KNOW ONE WILL KNOW! KNOW ONE WILL KNOW! That's it can't it anymore gotta buy another one just to call my play-mate!!!!!!! Hope you all get your's soon!!! YOU ARE GONNA LOVE THEM!!

Have fun!

Who did you order from? NW Cutlery I hope!

Justmy luck the guy who gets the first two is going to lock them away. Collectors, weird... Play with em a bit, then just call em "LNIB:, eh? They deserve it. Have fun my friend. Now its my turn. So were did ja get em?

Oh man........ Don't let those babies sit. Ya' gotta use 'em! You owe it to the Benchmade team to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

........ and this is some FINE tasting fruit!

Good luck dude, enjoy them........ no matter what you decide to do with them.

</A> If you play with love you will be heartbroken; if you play with knives you will [bleed]

There never will be another 119 or 170. I gotta tell you that from a pure financial standpoint, those will be valuable knives if kept NIB.

Fortunately, if you just tape the latch and the back of the safe handle as instructed on my site, you can flip 'em a bit (but do it over a soft surface such as carpeting just in case you drop one). Not to much though, as you'll scratch up the inside of the tang.

Maybe I'm missing something here. What's the point of buying two balisongs(Benchmades, which are the best around) if you're only going to put them away in a safety deposit box? When I order and receive mine(who knows when that will be!), I'll definitely practice flipping with it.

Thats my point K. But, I guess I can understand the collector value of marked BM's, especially pre-pro. Still, I prefer to play with my toys. Someday, when i'm older, wiser, and most importantly, with a more substantial and regular income, I may jump on the collecting for collectings sake wagon. In the meantime, I play with what i have. Makes me think back on all those He-Man and Star Wars guys that died so bravely. If only i had known...

Aw c'mon Sansei ! Gettin' those 42's has got to get you at least a LITTLE excited, right ?

I bought 2 also.....One for play, and one to put away. Glad ya got yours....Enjoy !

...so benchmade numbers its pre-productions (seems obvious) and their first run production units as well? hmmm......

dont feel bad, snipe... you're not the only one to foolishly order late

A knife begins with a concept in a paper or electronic sketch. Designers typically producc hundreds of these before they hit on a few that seem worth pursuing. Those few then get first-cut detailed design drawings made of them and concept prototypes made. Concept prototypes are strictly guarded. Most companies have strict policies against showing these outside of the company. Occationally, some of these are confidentially shown to experts, authorities, and key customers outside the company to get an independent reaction and get outside input.

If a design is not pursued, most companies destroy the concept prototypes or at least lock them up very tightly. Why? Because they don't want someone else to take one of their discarded ideas and run with it.

This makes a concept prototype a very valuable collectible if you can find one. I have two. In both cases, you would be surprised at which two famous knife companies toyed with making balisongs.

Out of a stack of concept prototypes, a few designs are selected to head toward production. After many intermediate prototypes which are also almost always destroyed, a finalized design arrives. A handfull of exact prototypes are made. In the case of the BM42, 25 first prototypes were made. These prototypes are made to be as close to the actual product as possible. Many of these are destined for destruction as well in exhaustive testing. Others are used by sales and marketing to promote the upcoming product. One of the BM42 protos was shown at the Shot show in Los Vegas. Another made an appearance a the recent Oregon show. Since there are very few of them and since many of them will be destroyed along the way, these early prototypes are also highly collectible.

The next step is a preliminary production run. These knives are made on the assembly line by assembly line workers using the exact same materials, tools, methods, etc. which production will use. The number here is kept fairly small, 200 in the case of 42, I think, but I'm not sure of that number. Each of these is carefully inspected to be sure that everything is going as expected. Some of these are used for sales and promotion, but many actually get sold to the public.

Finally, Benchmade has, lately, also been specially marking and numbering the first formal production run of each new knife. This is really done more as a collectible/commerative sort of thing than anything else.

Chuck,
are there any clues to those "two famous knife companies" (which you probably are not allowed to mention - prototype collector´s oath
smile.gif
) actually wanting to produce balisongs?

wow, his knowledge continues to impress...i guess they dont call him the Balisong Collector for nothing...
