I just got my 4th spyderco folder--- a para-2

I really like spyderco folders "on paper" but so far i havnt found one i like enough to keep, let along one that is in my EDC rotation.
The thing that keeps me comming back to spyderco is the steels they use, I cant think of another production knife company that uses the exotic steels spyderco does. Plus they are very low in price compared to other knives that use these exotic steels.

I really like flippers which is one reason i havnt been able to find a spyderco i like is that they dont have that many flippers. They have a lot more now then a few years ago when they only had a couple flipper models. The other problem is that the spyderco flippers are nowhere as good as Zero tolerance flippers (which are my favorite) IMO ZT makes the best production flippers. They have pretty much perfected it. Spyderco on the other hand doesnt have the experience that ZT does (in regards to flippers)

here are the models ive tried
-manix 2 light weight is s110v
-Mantra M4
-Positron s30v

I was really excited when i bought these knives but after carring them for a couple weeks i started to dislike them for various reasons
the manix 2 i couldnt take apart and clean because when i bought it, it was only offered in the FRN scales that are rivited together
the positron and the Mantra i didnt like because of the flipping action. I had to do a wrist flick while opening. I belive that all flippers should be able to open without a wrist flick, the flipper along should be able to open fully and lock it open

So far i am happy with my Para2 but we will see if i still like it in a couple weeks. I really hope i do. I keep trying to like spyderco folders. Hopefully this will be the knife that allows me to join the spyderco fan club

Nothing wrong if you don't, either. I love Spyderco for a broad variety of reasons, but I also don't care much about flippers at all. Hopefully you love it, but I wouldn't sweat it if you don't.

The Dice/Domino flip quite well if that's what you're looking for... I've also heard the action on the new Advocate is quite good and sports M4 steel.

I'm a fan of the the S110V para2--> Spyderco has a lot of knives that are extremely flickable without being flippers. I'm a sucker for a good flipper myself, however a flickable Spyderco like the PM2 also meets my plaything needs. I continue to be a fan because Spyderco offers so many knives with excellent cutting power with many different materials, all within a reasonable price range.

Keep it up, Spyderco is an exceptional company with excellent customer service and communicative leadership... I'm sure they make a knife that you will love.

This resonates with me. I love some of Spyderco's designs. I love the ergonomics and the innovation. Great steel selection. But they just aren't for me. And that's okay, because they are for plenty of other people. BUT, they did teach me enough about what I like to lead me in the directions of knives that are for me. Kinda like ex-girlfriends...

Don't stress if you don't fall in love. Plenty of knives out there for everyone, plus taste changes too, personally i don't have interest in ZT anymore, but i used to like their offerings. Now all i carry are Cold Steel/Benchmade/Spyderco. But that might change in future too. Spyderco Pacific Salt is my current favourite EDC, always carry it for it's care free never going to rust on me steel. Happy hunting.

In the flipper category, it is very difficult to beat the refinement of ZT's, but the Domino comes close. The only thing holding it back from being perfectly smooth, is the light friction from the internal stop pin. But I really like most everything about it.

Even though I like the Positron, it's not one that I would hold up as an example of a bearing flipper. Besides the small, light blade that requires more force for momentum, mine has very uneven milling inside the blade bearing race. I think smooth milling and/or the addition of smooth washers would have improved flipping action 200%.

I'll echo the sentiments of the PM2. It is as smooth and "flickable" as many flippers. I'm guilty of flicking mine for hours while watching tv. I also find the GB2 to be quite flickable.

And another one of my favorites is the little Chaparral. Not fast, but very smooth. Even if you desire larger knives for primary use, it's very easy to add as a secondary. Super thin, light, and I've grown to love the wire clips.

I also picked up a LW Manix2, not realizing that it was riveted. I still have it, but never warmed up to it. And after having BM Axis, I couldn't warm up to its super stiff lock either.

Good luck in your quest. I'm pretty sure I will be on that hunt for the rest of my life. I'm a little too ADD and distracted by "what's next" to settle with that "One Great Knife". I have a shelf full of really amazing knives. But it sure is fun trying. [emoji56][emoji41]

Zt does make good flippers, but the domino is right up there with them imo.

Yup!! My blue twill Domino & all black Southard are my favorite Spydie's!
They flip every bit as well as my 3 ZTs. Especially the Southard.
It sure if you have checked out WE knives, but they are excellent flippers!!

Why do you feel the need to like spyderco's? If you like them fine, if you don't fine, just move on. I happen to love spyderco's and dislike most benchmade's. Nothing wrong with benchmade's, just personal taste.

Another vote for the Domino. Standard steel is XHP I believe and you can also get it in CTS-204p from BBS. I have the BBS one and love it.

Master the middle finger or index finger flick, and you won't ever need, nor much desire, a flipper tab.

I went through a phase where all I thought I liked were flippers and that was the first thing I looked for. That has passed.
The Spyderhole has such a broad variety of methods to use to open or deploy, it is enjoyable for me. From slow and deliberate if in public, to a quick flick or drop and you're ready for a task. Middle finger flick also results in your hand being closer to a regular grip, also, instead of a pinch grip like a flipper.

But, what has become more important to me than opening method, is ergonomics. The variety of models and ergo styles is quite astounding, to fit so many uses and individual needs.

I'm exact opposite to the OP, i've been through many ZTs now and have only held onto one I like (the 0220) and that's just because I love Anso designs. Everyone's tastes are different, I realized ZTs are just not for me and moved on. For Spyderco flippers, my BBS Domino in CTS-204P is as smooth as they come, even better than my regular Domino.

Lol, I see a lot of people complain. Not far off from the flipper.
Is it considered a crude opening method that makes you cringe? It gets the job done consistently for me, and it's like muscle memory now.

I've just been around since Spyderco started. Tip down pinch clip open.
Flicking makes me cringe, like seeing a dually pickup lowered six inches. Just why?
Oh well to each their own.

I have been in the same boat - owned about 6 or so (Para 2, Domino, Sage 2, Southard, Manix 2, etc)

Got a Sage 5 this week. And now I'm officially on the band wagon! I can't get enough of this little guy! Great edc blade.
