I put together a light, little cook kit

the stove is a Wetfire Ti stove that burns either Wetfire tinder cubes or Esbit cubes, weight is a whopping 13 grams :)

the pot/mug is SnowPeak Ti 600 weighs 2.8 oz w/ stuff sack

the lid is custom made (aluminum) 0.5 oz

the windscreen (including base) is custom made (Ti) 0.9 oz

the mini bic and candles weigh 0.6 oz

the SnowPeak spork weighs 0.5 oz

here's the entire kit

kit packed (all fits in the SP mug, including 3 esbit tabs)

setup:

I've also got it setup that I can burn wood by adding two ti stakes (carried anyways due to my tarp/poncho setup)

stay tuned I'll I have a test report w/ Esbit vs Wetfire cubes and also try out the woodburning config :)

Pretty slick, but I would rather have a long handled spork and store it somewhere else.

thanks gents :)

here's the results of the test- conducted at 50 F at 2900', pretty well sheltered but a swirling wind

1.5 cups of cold tap water- idea was to get it to a full rolling boil (1.5 cups chosen as that what I typically use w/ a single serving freeze dried supper)

first I wanted to compare Esbit w/ Wetfire- as the Esbit is 0.5 oz and the Wetfire is 0.2 I decided to try a 1/2 esbit tab first

halfesbitvswetfire.jpg

results not impressive- at 7.5 minutes it got close, but then the tab quickly burnt out

halfesbit730.jpg

next the Wetfire cube, again not impressive- at 6:30 semi-close, then burnt out

wetfire630.jpg

also should be noted the wetfire was very smoky, smelled bad and left a lot of soot on the pot

wetfiresoot.jpg

next I tried a full Esbit tab- finally success at 7 minutes :)

it should be noted there was ~ 1/4 +/- of tab left

I wanted to try the wood setup so I lit the remaining 1/4 esbit and then started adding kindling

I was very surprised how effective this was- full roll boil at 6 minutes :D

conclusions- the wetfire tabs make great fire starter- especially in the wet- they don't make good stove fuel- I'll keep a couple in my kit (but not for the stove)

the esbit at full cube makes a very effective stove fuel and will be my primary fuel choice

the wood worked great and will supplement the esbit and in case of fuel shortages will be a great backup

Interesting results. I almost bought some Wetfire tinder the other day but got the Esbits cubes instead. Looks like a good choice.

The more I think about your little lightweight kit, the more I like it. It's compact and lightweight, but versatile. Nice setup.

I think the wetfire tinders are great for fire starting (even in the very wet), but they clearly fall short in the fuel category

here's a video of a side by side comparo- the wetfire burns out quickly

I'll still keep a tinder or two in my kit however

one thing I should add is price, the Esbit tabs are significantly cheaper as well

Good review. I like how light your setup is. Are you able to move the stove around once it is lit? Does it scorch the ground benath it? I usually use a 1/4 piece of an esbit tab to start fires in my bushbuddy stove and, while it probably weighs a few ounces more, I was relieved to find that it did not scorch picnic tables or the ground. I'm stuck dealing with the soot problem, though.

Nice set up, I like "multi-fuel" systems like that.

Did you mod that spork or is it that short to start with?

I light the stove before setting the windscreen over, so the stove can be moved (you just have to be careful not to burn yourself :))

If you look at the one pic that shows the entire kit, you'll see a round piece of Ti- that goes underneath- mainly for the wood burning, but I think it helps reflect some heat upward. Even w/o that piece I don't think there would be any danger of scorching w/ the Esbit stove- w/ it there is none

the spork is SnowPeak short one- perfect fit for the 600 mug, works good eating out of a quart ziplock too (typically my breakfasts consist of cereal w/ instant milk and my suppers are re-hydrated in a ziplock-all ate out of the bag)

thanks- it's working out really well I haven't had it out on any long trips (winter has set in), but have it out on several day hikes- cooking up soup/hot beverages. I've used both wood and Esbit and very satisfied w/ both :)

I'm trying to figure out a configuration to connect the ends of the windscreen- thinking about cutting out tabs to slide into slots on the other side- the paper clips work OK, but I'm sure there is a better solution

Very cool. It really is impressive at how just a little fire from wood will get water to boiling so quick. A small fire in a little container like that is just awesome. I have folding stove called the pocket cooker and it is really a neat little cooker.

Again great set up and thanks for posting it.

Nice set up, I was wondering how you made the lid? Can we get some details please.

Thanks

Hi- I didn't make the lid, purchased from here, he has them for the 700 as well (a few others possibly too):

the lid is nice as it has drain holes in it if you decide to cook pasta or the like- you drain the water off

the little wooden knob stays relatively cool so you can grab it w/o burning your fingers, it's also made so it hangs on the side of your pot

What's the thickness of your foil? I also really like your design, it is simplicity itself!
