my ebay 885UH has just arrived. it was advertised as "older, unused". it does not even have any light handling/storage scuffs on the v. shiny bolsters. with the long nail pull, tang stamp:SCHRADE/N.Y. U.S.A./885UH, and serial # on inside of liner C 7043, i believe it dates from early '70s. however, it is unlike my other Schrades: all 3 blades have play, the spring for the main clip blade is weak, it has LH stamped on tang of sheepsfoot and UH on tang of spey, and the staglon is a salmon/pink color at the bolster ends.
why does it have LH stamp ? (left handed ?), and is the odd color of the staglon most likely due to sun exposure while on display ?
the knife is absolutely mint (but no box or papers), so is it o.k. to lightly tap the bolsters with a rubber mallet to try to decrease blade play ?
have attached pics , first one is 885UH (upper), 897UH (lower, for staglon comparison ?)

Hitting it with a rubber mallet might relieve some of your frustration and disappointment, but it won't affect the blade play. The knife has the Swinden keyhole construction and the bolsters are not the pivot points for the blades. The liners are.

Some color variations will be found over the years both in the base Delrin plastic and the dyes used to get the accent colors. My group of 897UH knives includes that color among others. I don't know what your "LH" stamp is all about. Perhaps it was a bad UH stamp die.

thank you Michael, however as pic. shows well the LH is clearly L and H. it is not a partial U. the UH on the spey blade is also very clear. these 2 are quite deeply stamped and quite sharp in outline and at least twice the size of the lettering in the SCHRADE stamp. the C7043 serial number is fairly low, so this is an early 885UH. could others with early 885UH's check theirs for an LH stamp on the tang of the sheepsfoot ? thanks, i NEED to know. this knife looks so new, like it was made yesterday, so i wonder if all is not as it seems. (the fakery and incestuous shenanigans of the knife business is getting me paranoid). roland

So is this knife a left over schrade parts knife too with that blade in a regular UH??? -Joel

Dunno if that can be determined. Quite possible it was just made that way. The commem was circa 1975. So t is just possible that the blade got mixed in on the cutler's production tray. It is also possibly a knife that was rejected for blade play and ... pocketed. No real way to ever know that I am aware of. Once again a nice oddity for display regardless of defect as a user.

Michael, amazing, you almost NEVER get stumped. perhaps your moniker should be "Ace Knife Detective" ! you've kindly spent a lot of time and effort in the last month or so help to answer my endless (so far) questions. i feel i should send you a knife (non Chinese); gotta keep the detective guy fed and make sure he doesn't run short of knives.
seriously, if one day i post about a knife and it happens to be one you really NEED (if you don't already have every Schrade possible), i'll send it to you.
