He sharpened his Leek by himself on the 4000 waterstone, he was pretty excited and wanted me to share this with ya'll.

Wasn't real dull to begin with, would slice printer paper readily, but not phonebook. Couple of minutes at 800 then onto 4000 for about 10 minutes....kept putting sharpie on the edge to make sure he was keeping things consistent.

Very nice work for such a young man. I started freehand sharpening when I was about 5 or 6 on a couple of small Arkansas stones given to me by my grandfather. It was another 15-20 years and some vastly upgraded equipment before I could achieve results like your son. Keep him going on freehand sharpening, in the end it's just far more satisfying than any kind of jig setup or grinder.

That's awesome! He seems to be a natural. As mentioned, he'll be a guru by the time he's a bit older.

Great job and an applause to the kid. I must say that he has reached a milestone in knife sharpening and should be proud.

WHAT?! You gave a kid a knife?!

Good job! Sounds like he knows what he's doing with it. He can probably sharpen better than a lot of us here.

Thanks guys. He really enjoyed reading these comments. It's funny how obsessed he can get, he's often trying to get me to see if his knife will shave my arm hair since he doesn't really have any. :)

Does he have more hair on his head than you do? :p

I'm affectionately reminded almost daily that a lot of my top cover has gone AWOL, while my son looks like Cousin It (Adams Family).

My son carries a couple of different Traditionals when needed, and hasn't shown much interest in locking knives. I had thought of getting him a Leek at one point, but he also likes the look of my Delica though, so maybe that's a start.

nominated for father of the year award.
He is doing a good job. And lucky to have access to quality sharpening tools.

That is really awesome, in all seriousness I have never really tried to sharpen a knife before, which is kinda sad. Well again nice work.
