Kind of reminds me of the time I had to help a friend set up a court date to argue a driving ticket. Walking into the building, I didn't really think much of it till I saw the metal detectors, then realizing that I wouldn't be allowed to pass. My girlfriend passed right on through without a hitch, but alas, it wouldn't be the same for me.
At this point, I thought, "Hey, perhaps there's a place for me to store all this stuff till I'm ready to head out," so I decided to empty my pockets then and there. This was before I aware of carrying a single slipjoint with multiple blades, so I had about three different folders for different jobs, along with a pile of other junk from my SHTF days.
Security simply said, "Um, sir, you're going to need to leave that in your car. You're not allowed to bring that in." Nodding in understanding, I simply took my stuff, walked out, dropped it off at the car, and came back in. She simply waved me down with the sensor and let me through.
After I made it into the building, my girlfriend tells me, "Man, you're lucky. I was talking to the security guard and she said that she could've booked you on the spot. She said you looked like a nice guy, but just wasn't thinking."
So, moral of the story? A little foresight goes a long way. No more knives in the federal or state buildings.
