This thread is pretty much about you'r technique(s) for sharpening on a sharpening stone. To start off, here's mine. I use a silicon carbide stone and lubricate it with water. When I sharpen I find that the best thing to to is pretend to cut a very fine layer off the top of the stone. This always gets me great results (and it was the best sharpening tip (I ever received). That's how I do it, plain and simple. Now lets here how you guys sharpen on a stone.

So, would you say you are micro beveling in your technique?

Kind of I guess. I'm not the fancies't sharpener out there and I don't know all of the vocabulary and such, but my techniques work great for me and are pretty simple. Don't get me wrong, I'm not dumb when It comes to sharpening and sharpening terms but, to be honest if I did not know about the one technique I talked about then I would probably be using a guide or not using a stone at this point.

There are many techniques that get used depending on the needs.

In simplest terms the best technique is the one that removes the material that is not a sharp edge the fastest;)

Regarding tips and tricks...Some of the best are the sharpie tip, and the multitude of sharpness tests floating around.

Age is not everything, but often times the person with the most time sitting at the stones will have the most wisdom...and much of this wisdom can not be conveyed very well any other way (than to spend time with the craft). Note I am talking about free hand here...there are many guided-devices available that flatten the learning curve a bit...but even then, there is often a very noticeable difference in the results from someone with a higher level of craft.
