finished my sheath......but rewind....
last night i put my ASH LE in it to wet mold the sheath.........i dont know what or why i was thinking.....brain:you should cover the blade with something...me:ya good idea....i gots me some blue tape right here........

well i let it dry into this morning and when i went to unsheath it and take off the tape...........................oh the horror..........................marks everywhere...and what looks like rust to boot. now i was gonna use it anyway....but i would think it would take a little more than my dumb idea and a wet sheath and blue tape to F@#$ up a LE blade........the rust looking spots are above the 4 and around the dogtag C area.....as for the tape patina.....i can live with that. i did try to lightly clean it with soap and a soft toothbrush....so the spots u see are there untill i do something drastic with it.

oh ya....my sheath turned out nice........

The patina's kinda cool.

Nothing 30 seconds with some fitz or semichrome polish won't disappear.

But hey, it's a user, adds character

INFI's not stainless.

true....not with the fanfair i wanted.....but i guess i learned a lesson cause i would be really pissed at myself if i was going to keep it mint.....but then i would not have used it to mold my sheath to begin with.

fitz and keep it oiled........sounds like the Rx i was looking for!

edited: i guess even superman has his kryptonite...........i should not be suprised to learn even INFI has a little upkeep involved.
thanks

+1 on the Flitz.

Just rub from spine to edge... spine to edge. :D
parallel with the grind lines.

She'll clean right up!

..

yep.........pics tomorrow after some kitchen prep........goin for the

KITCHEN CAMO

will have to see what citrus and tomato and onion....make that pruty blade look like:D

looks great, nice job  as for the rust, use some 0000 steel wool and some gun oil and rub it off with the grain of the steel.

sheath pics......................

i went for a simple molded (front and back) neck .................

and an X belt or strap loop as i am going to move this from my pack to the dangler i am making for my MOFBM.......i put it on my pants belt and it rides a little high but still wearable if i need to

the ASH is well retained with the molded neck....i did not think it would turn out this cool......feels like Kydex
(i used 9-10 oz. leather)

i still have not burnished the edges......i am making a tool to do a thick project like this and will have it done tomorrow:thumbup:

SKUNKis da HOG............
Militec-1 and steel wool and my LE is back to normal...................................

what a baby i am...........but if i didnt post , i wouldnt learn!!!! thanks for the other tips on wrapping a blade for molding. i am use to doing holsters and i wrap up the guns tightly with plastic wrap...sometimes i seal-a-meal the guns (which works great)

I put my satin GW away damp once and had spots all over when I pulled her out again. 25 secs with a scotchbrite pad and all gone. NO PITTING.Thats the most important thing, to me anyhow. INFI isnt titanium, some upkeep is necessary. I have been meaning to pick up some FLITZ as well but have so far used mineral oil only and works fine, even on some of my super high carbon chefs knives(in south florida at that).

I once got some 3V wet doing the same thing. It pitted that steel in less than 15 minutes. Wet leather is like an acid wash, very corrosive. YOu are lucky it was infi. You actually do not need more than a few seconds at a time to mold leather. And with a wrapped blade there should be no problem. I am glad you were ableto clean your blade and nice sheath.

Don't feel too badly... I completely screwed up a fatty GW on the edgepro today before I finally gave up and convexed the edge. Bad news is it's all scratched to hell, and the tip is not so pointy anymore... Good news is that it's a real slicer now. Ah,well... Ya live & learn, right?? :) BTW, nice lookin' sheath!

Lol, I did the same thing with a Spyderco Yojimbo folder last year. Thought it would be cool to take the edge down to ~10 deg. each side. I had just got some DMT flat stones and figured to give it a go free hand. So what did I do? I started off on the 120 micron diamond stone and scratched the heck out of the blade flats!:o I stopped with the free hand attempt right there and took out the edge pro. Somehow I managed to screw up the flat/straight edge and it ended up having a slight hawk bill shape. It was salvageable though, cleaned up the scratches and then sent the folder back to spyderco to fix the edge. Lesson learned, don't try to fix what ain't broke (especially on a factory new/cherry knife)!:D

Learned the same lesson myself with the first sheath I made. I made a folded/taco design for a Swamp Rat M6. First mistake, I fully assembled the sheath (without completely fitting the knife) including stitching (stitching at the time consisted of copper rivets along the whole edge:p) the edges. Then I soaked it and jammed the knife into the sheath to wet mold it. Second mistake, leaving the knife in overnight (unprotected). Can anyone say RUST! Third mistake, well this can probably tie in with the second and first. Since the sheath was already a snug fit, as the leather dried, it shrank around the knife and I couldn't take it out! I had to put the handle of the knife in a vise (wrapped thickly with a towel) and pull the sheath off with pliers.:o

Good news is that the sheath turned out half way decent and luckily the rust was only on the knife edge due to the blade coating. That was an easy fix with the edge pro!
