I am looking at the Lansky Dual-Grit Puck Sharpener but I am not for sure if I really need it.

I already have a Norton Alundum Oilstone that is about 2.5 inches x about 6 inches in two grits which I believe are about 600 grit on one side and maybe 1200 grit on the other.

Can I just use my square Norton Alundum Oilstone on my axe blades or does it have to be a Lansky Dual Grit Puck Sharpener? What is so great about the round disk if I already have something that will do the job and I can pack it easier and for more reasons?

Thanks if you reply.

I can't see the need for a new stone if the one you already have works fine.

The pucks are cheap and do a good job of "scrubbing" out damage. But for simple edge maintenance (rather than repair) the one you have should fit the bill.
