We got a bunch of snow recently, so I took off into the woods literally across my street. I'd never actually explored them before.

I found a stone wall and barbed wire fence:

The area I explored is swampy land. Water levels appear to have risen recently, killing most trees, but leaving some alive. This made it pretty clear to snowshoe through:

Lots of reeds and grasses, mostly dead:

Quite a few mushrooms on the trees, including some black, crusty one on a birch that may have been analogous to tinder fungus. The sun was setting when I left, so no time to experiment. I'm not sure if the kind in the picture is significant in any way.

There were a whole bunch of uprooted trees. The soil they pulled up was very... soily. This is surprising because I live in an extremely rocky area, and normally roots pull up a bunch of gravel with them. This swampland though appears to be mostly dirt. The one below was about seven feet tall:

Just as I was thinking that you could make a great shelter out of that (either as one wall of a lean-to or as a fire-reflector), I came across this. Big upturned tree to the left making a vertical wall, and a cave of earth to the right:

Come on inside!

Talk about a head start on building a shelter! It's a full blown cave made of pulled up earth. Stuff it with snow or pine boughs, and you'd be warm for the night.

You'd also be living close to dinner, for better or worse:

Followed some deer tracks out:

A green leaf in winter! Raspberry or blackberry plant:

Looks like a fun outing. It's good to know your local woods areas, no matter how big or small. I bet you'll remember that berry bush this summer!

Im pretty sure those are old Oyster mushrooms. When fresh they are very good to eat.

very good pics thanks for showing. consider that building a fire might loosen the sod on your roof. build a little fire before attempting to spend a nite there.--dennis
