My bad PM2 luck

I have had a S30V pm2 for about 2 years now and I haven't even had to adjust 1 screw. Then at the beginning of this year I got a blurple S110V pm2. Out of box action was not smooth. I adjusted the pivot and later heard it could be the stop pin screw, which it was. But after adjusted all the screws it had bladeplay. Even when it was so tight the blade could hardly close. After disassembling and reassembling it about 5 times it still had some play.

I eventually ordered a new one and thought I would use the first one for spare parts. While waiting for it I thought I would give disassembling it one more time and cleaning it a last try. For some unexplainable reason tge bladeplay was gone. And was extremely smooth.

Then the new one arrived and out of box it had a lot of bladeplay. I didn't think it was a big problem because I finally managed to fix the first one. Unfortunately this one had red loctite. I managed to unscrew both pivot screws and one stop pin screw and one handle screw. I can still disassemble it with one stop pin screw and one handle scale screw in (both looks very tight. But after disassembling and reassembling and cleaning it like with the first one it still has a lot of blade play. It's been lying in my drawer ever since and I try this process of cleaning every once in a while with no luck. I just don't understand why there is bladeplay. I have contacted Spyderco to request spare screws so that I can drill out the stuck ones and see if complete disassembly might work because sending it in from South Africa is more trouble than it's worth.

I just wonder why this happened to both my pm2's. Has anyone else had this type of experience with a pm2?

I have four PM2s with S30V. I took one apart and also stripped a screw even after heat and using quality torx tools, so I don’t disassemble them after that experience. All four of them have slight blade play which I am ok with. It doesn’t seem to be an issue when using them.

I've had a few PM2s in my time and I currently have a bunch of users, but have never experienced any blade play issue unless something like the pivot screw is turning itself loose with time and use.

ETA: I will say that if you've disassembled one and put it back together, it may help to check screw tightness by attempting to tighten a given screw simultaneously as you attempt to tighten the screw opposite the first one. You tighten both at once. I don't think I've seen it with the pivot screw, but some of the others can feel tight and spin the spacer tubes even though once you place a torx bit on the opposite side, you can still easily tighten one or both screws. Might help a little. Just a thought.

I have bought 3 PM2. One came perfect with no play and no pivot adjustment needed. The other two came tightened down as far as possible with aggressive loctite. I was able to fix both with slight adjustment. No play on either and good action. At this point, these kinds of variation in finish of the pm2 are to be expected.

I’ve only bought one PM2 and mine has zero blade play. I’m sorry to hear about what’s happened to you but if that happened to me, the knife with the blade play would go back to the vendor I bought it from. I know BladeHQ pays for the return shipping of unacceptable knives. They all should. Don’t they?

Use a soldering iron with small tip into the screw torx socket hole,,, enough temperature eliminates any problems with excessive tightness from the red Loctite (which is no longer used).

I have 15 PM2 from Spyderco and none have blade play when open and locked.
If you have a slight amount unlocked this is normal.
A few were slightly tight open/close when new,, some lub and very slight turn with Wiha torx bit and now are perfect.

FK

That's why I think it might be fixed after I get to unscrew the 2 that is stuck in the handle. Thanks

Yes but where I bought it it has to be within 30 days and without disassembly.. unfortunately.

I did use a soldering iron but the two still in the handle is spinning with the pins even with the soldering iron for a long time. The one with the problem you can actually hear the bladeplay when open so it's a lot, even when tightening the pivot screws all the way. That's why I think it might work when I get those screws that is stuck out

I also noticed the liner with the D shape for the pivot pin is not a snug fit. If I insert the pin over the washer (without the screw) it can be turned about 20° side to side. Btw I suck at math so that 20 degree was just a guess. Although I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the bladeplay since it doesn't move when the screw is tightened
