I thought my Barlow's needed a family portrait.
There'll be a new addition next week. ;)

Thanks for that Phil. Barlows were my first love as a youngster. My very first knife was a Case Barlow given to me by my Grandmother that belonged to my Grandfather. I don't have to say how much I wish I still had that knife! I don't collect them any more but the Barlow pattern holds some very fond memories in my mind.

I am glad you started this thread. I was going to start one just like it.
Here is my collection of Russell Barlows Left to me by my grandfather. He really loved them and I was lucky enough to be the only grandson :D
He owned a hrdware store for many years and people would trade him knives for other goods.

Wow Charley! that's an outstanding collection and one heck of a first post.
My first Barlows were that Russell set that my wife bought me back in 1998, they are I feel the best Barlows that I own. I couldn't imagine owning over 50...Congratz.

BTW, welcome to BFC.

Thanks guys.
I have tried to find some info on them but it is almost non-existant on the web.
He died in 71 and I know that they are much older than that.
I have only seen a couple of other originals at gun and knife shows.
I really have no idea of the value of the collection. I don't think that I would ever sell them but would be interested to know what they are worth.
The ones I have seen individually have been priced from $200-$500.
The ones on the boards are the best of the bunch. He put them on the boards to display at his store I believe.
Anyway, any idea of the value?

Amigos colecciones fantásticas . Mirarlos todos juntos es un placer .Gracias por mostrar .

Great collections!

Thought I'd show you one I just finished one a few weeks ago. Not quite traditional.

Bill, what a beautiful rendition of a Classic pattern.

Here's another look at my Schatt & Morgan, it's my next favorite Barlow, even though it's not stag but Winterbottom bone. Whatever the heck that means.

I am so glad to look at this thread! I get so wrapped up in the new modern knives I forget sometimes how nice the traditional stuff is. I need to go and look a the Case knives I have set aside. Paul

But like Phil said, great rendition of a classic pattern. That damascus is cool. It looks like some kind of amphibian skin. What kind of burl wood is that?

Indeed. I'm curious too. I know Winterbottom when I see it but where did the term come from?

Great knives guys, I like Barlows, I used to make some years ago.
This thread may have just inspired me to make a few Barlows again :)

When I bought this Barlow off Ebay the seller did warn that this knife was stiff. He was right this Wostenholm I-XL is a nail buster. As much as I've tried to loosen it up it's still not a knife that you'd want to use. It does however fit in nicely with my little collection.

I have another stag Barlow coming this week, that I'll add to this thread.

Staggerriffic!
Great stuff, it sounds like you need a knife pick for the last one.
SMKW sometimes has them in their catalog, or you could commission one with a stag handle :D

Greg, that is a beauty!

Here's my newest.

I received a new stag Barlow today that I won on Ebay. It appears to be a handmade knife and the maker is A. M. Mayhall. I asked when I was first bidding on this knife if anyone knew who this maker is, I also asked the seller, and I drew a blank. Although I have no background on this maker he obviously knew what he was doing. He made a fine knife. The walk & talk is wonderful and the fit & finish is very nice. Both blades have half stops and the tangs barely extent above the bolster when closed, and they are nicely rounded over. Reminds me of the J. Russell Barlow. The stag matches well, but there seems to be some shrinkage, leaving a hairline gap between the scale and the bolster. So my guess is this is not a new knife. It’s been handled some, but appears to be unsharpened and unused.

I like this knife a lot. I’ve carried the small Russell Barlow quite a bit, but I would feel a lot more comforatble carrying this Mayhall instead. There is something about a Barlow knife that’s it’s just nice to handle closed when you’re on the phone or something, (kind of like handling worry beads) I call it Fondle Factor. This knife scores high in Fondle Factor.
