i'm always tinkering with my gear and examine it in detail every year or so to see how it evolved from the last time. last time i went through it was over a year ago (http://jungletraining.com/forums/showthread.php?32227-Let-s-see-your-pack-setups-and-content) so it's time to do it again...this is my baseline gear now for the curious.

1. dmt diafold fine & extra-fine diamond sharpening stone.
2. ~50 ft of 550 paracord.
3. bahco hi-viz laplander folding saw.
4. sawyer mini water filter, iodine tablets, and coffee filters.
5. fenix e05 aaa flashlight with an extra battery.
6. cheap poncho.
7. emberlit fireant.

they all go inside this medium ultralight kifaru pullout.

8. toiletry...i can easily cut the hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol (usually for disinfecting my knife for food prep if i don't have a boiliing water ready yet) in half but it's light enough for me as it is.
9. first aid kit – including signal mirror so i can check my eyes in case of debris, extra pair of contact lens and fluid.
10. evernew 900 ml titanium pot.
11. sea to summit titanium spoon (this took me awhile to track down since they're usually aluminum).

12. thermarest sit/kneeling pad – fits inside the extra small pullout.

13. anyone who ever hiked with me knows i'm paranoid about water so i always bring minimum 2 liters of water...food changes though depending on who i'm with or the trip.

base_gear_04_zpsfnzadytn.jpg

my base pack weight is now 3 lbs 11 oz (including the gossamer gear riksak backpack which is just under 5 oz)...with the above water and food it's 7 lbs 14 oz.

14. after hiking with bearthedog for awhile now i picked up a few of his habits – i keep my psk (personal survival kit) with me at all times except when sleeping...fire kit (including chlorine tablets) in my left front pocket.

base_gear_06_zpsyvsgaeis.jpg

15. compass, whistle and light hangs in my belt loop. the rest in my cargo pants' pockets.

16. mora around my neck and 1-liter bladder in my cargo pants' right pocket. i told you i'm paranoid about water!

17. 15 ft or so of paracord wrapped around my pants.

base_gear_09_zpsvzvh1hpn.jpg

so basically everything i truly need are in my pants...the backpack just carries the nice to have ones.

as a side note, i really like this rei sahara tech long sleeve shirt...paired with crye precision boonie hat is usually enough to keep the mosquitoes at bay and i don't have to bring sunscreen.

base_gear_11_zpslivuxh2l.jpg

depending on my mood i'll bring the heavy cover titanium canteen kit.

base_gear_12_zpspmzngqaq.jpg

3-5 pieces of printer paper is usually enough for a cutting board.

base_gear_13_zpsvvcmwuss.jpg

been hiking with these low top salewa for a year now but i can go with something lighter when they wear out.

base_gear_14_zpsdezeilpx.jpg

i haven't gone full-on weight weenie though...if i bring more than the mora then these are my current favorites for serious wood processing.

...from last weekend's day hike.

All I see is orange:D

Good choices. I first thought you said "base-weight" and it threw me off a little!

Man, you need my Afghan-shemagh that's in orange:D

Well thought out gear list.

A little bummed that no Kifaru (pack) is listed though!

there is one small kifaru pull out in the list lol.

Good pack set up. Ultra light weight with all the essentials covered.

Thanks for posting! This is a really neat setup!

Very interesting to see that you carry it all in your pants!

thanks. my overnight gear list is full of kifaru though: ku3700/zxr/t3 backpack, woobie/doobie/20 deg slick bag depending on temps, and a supertarp :D

thanks...those pullouts keep things organized so my ocd doesn't act up but still lightweight.

you're welcome! i actually started out hating anything in my pockets even on the streets - anything more than a cell phone i can't tolerate...but now i'm used to carrying more.
